In What Regionss Did ABC Cut-Off The End Of The USC/UCLA Game??

Just after 8 P.M. EST tonight (December 3rd), the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football championship game between Virginia Tech and Florida State was about to start in Jacksonville, but the game between USC and UCLA (both televised by ABC) was still underway, although USC had a one-sided lead.

About 8:07 or so, WCVB-5 here in Boston was switched to the start of the ACC football championship game.

While I fully expected ABC stations in the home areas of the two teams in the ACC title tilt to be switched-away, I also expected the rest of the network to have stayed with USC/UCLA to conclusion, and join the Virginia Tech/Florida State game in progress.

On the other hand, Boston is now within the ACC's region, given that Boston College now belongs to that conference.

Was it only the ACC region that was switched-away from the end of the USC/UCLA game?? Or could it have been the whole network (with the likely exception of KABC-7 Los Angeles)??

KNXV-TV Phoenix was also switched. Not sure
if it was at the same time as I had the TV on
mute and was concentrating more on the new
WABC radio Saturday night oldies show (via
their stream). ABC switched to the studio
(Saunders, et al) then to the ACC game.

A bit surprising since PHX is a PAC-10 market,
but I suppose Dr. Pepper paid big bucks for
the national exposure so they may have
switched everyone except El-Lay.

They cut it off early in Birmingham, which is an SEC market, but FSU is the most popular non-SEC team here.

According to my buddy who is the weekend sports guy at the local ABC affiliate, the plan all along was to switch the entire country, except for the state of California, to the start of the ACC-CG if one team held a lead of more than 21 points at the 8 PM Eastern kickoff time.

If the game had been close, ABC had the right to delay kick-off up to ten minutes. They likely would have done what they did in 1998, when the Big XII championship (in which #2 Kansas State was upset either late in the game or in overtime) ran long. They did not switch ANYBODY, including the home markets, to the kickoff of the SEC Championship. I know that for a fact because I live in Knoxville, TN, and we were not switched, much to the dissapointment of many UT fans, with our perfect season hanging in the balance.

A little after 8:00 p.m., when the ACC Championship Game was to start, I had assumed WJXX here in Jacksonville would switch over from the USC-UCLA game right at 8 sharp, or a minute or two after, maybe. I also expected it would. Same thing with Tallahassee, FSU's home market, and Virginia Tech's home market as well.

Cut away from it in Scranton, Pa., too

Since the USC-UCLA game was a blowout, ABC may
have figured there was no point in keeping the
game on the air outside L.A. But I wouldn't
know; I was over at CBS watching my Dawgs take
LSU apart.
