Incredible night of AM DX from Yakima - 11/22/2016 (2, maybe 3 new + new state)

One of the best nights of the season, and probably one of the best nights since 2014 for AM DX. 2 new logs, both from a NEW STATE!

Starting at 2310 PT
590 Rockish music under KQNT, north-south, probably KTHO South Lake Tahoe (rare)
600 CJWW Saskatoon w/ local ads, strong
630 CHED Edmonton w/ Old Time Radio, S9+
680 CJOB Winnipeg, MB good w/ ID under KNBR, "680 CJOB" into Coast to Coast. 11:13PM PT
750 CKJH Melfort SK w/ oldies well over Portland and Price, UT
760 KDSP CO - Fox Sports. Very common on 1KW
1050 CJNB North Battleford very strong with country music, IDs - no sign of sister station CKBI-900, just a faint KBIF, oddly enough
1040 WHO Des Moines w/ Coast to Coast, under Vancouver
1150 Country music under CKFR. Probably the ultra-rare CJSL Estevan! Only heard ONCE on 1280 when I lived in Bothell. Never heard on 1150. Still wouldn't be new even with freq. change. I only count new stations as first-time heard, not when they flip frequencies. Aired "I Don't Dance" by Lee Brice around 11:25 PT/1:25A CT.
1220 CJRB Boissevain w/ usual classical music, not heard often. 950 CFAM not noted, nor CHSM 1250 (needed).
1530 WCKY Cincinnati w/ Overcomer Ministry (Brother Stair) under KFBK, easily noted at times when CA nulled, // 930 KYAK. Have heard this 2 or 3 times this season, and before that it was twice ever!
1270 KVMI Tulare w/ Christmas music
1570 KBCV Hollister, MO w/ Bott Radio Network mention and religious talk, near 2330 PT. 1,561 miles on 3KW! This is not new, I've heard this a few times before. XERF was hardly noted.
1570 at 2330 PT - NBC Sports Radio, IRS tax relief ad, possible local ads, way deep in jumble. Need to share recording. Suspect WSCO WI.

NEW #1
1600 - WRPN Ripon, WI; fair signal with Hometown Radio weather, rain showers expected, ment. Highway 23 and website am1600radio.com, at 2333 PT 11/22. Also heard at 0006 PT 11/23, just as strong! NEW STATE!!!! NEW #725, 5KW at 1,545 miles! This channel is extremely crowded, with KVRI, KTUB, KEPN, KOPB, KOHI, KGST, and others mixing in and out. I can't believe that this signal made it through. You'll be shocked by the signal strength when I post the recording.
Also on the recording, unknown if it was WRPN or another station, but there was a very weak station with Percy Faith's "We Need a Little Christmas." Whodat?

1660 KQWB West Fargo, huge with Bison 1660 ment. and Fox Sports programming. 1KW, recorded.
1580 KKTS WY's 230w mixing with several others
1590 Possible sports under KLFE. Too busy with others to notice. With WRPN, wonder if this was WPVL WI 470w?
1650 After Hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio...possible KCNZ. This was under KBJD, and faded at TOH.
1600 KTUB UT takes over from WRPN/etc at 2350, with Regional Mexican music.

NEW #2
1670 - WOZN Madison, WI; signal strength varying from poor to OVER Redding! CBS Sports Radio, Amy Lawrence After Hours, heard from 2340-2359 PT...IDed "The Zone" at 2358 PT, well over KQMS. A much-wanted X-Band station logged! NEW #726, 1KW at 1,537 miles!

As said earlier, 1650 KBJD Denver heard at midnight w/ TOH, no sign of KCNZ. Over to 1570...
NBC Sports Radio is DOMINATE! NBA basketball scores, NBC Sports Radio IDs but no local ID. Still suspecting Appleton, WI, non-directional 331 watts. Recorded for signal strength only, with no ID.
At 0004 PT, Amy Lawrence is back talking over KBJD at times. With work the next day, can't play much longer...still suspect Iowa. Need this one to capture all three IA X-Banders.

Final listen was back to 1600, with Fox News Radio well over jumble, Hometown Radio, WeatherEye forecast, and another mention of WRPN's website. Wow!

This morning was full of Asian activity, with the usual big gun NHK's blistering strong, Asian talk on 792 well over SEVERAL domestic 790s, and a huge chance that I have bagged the Pyongyang Broadcasting Station on 657 khz. Poor to fair audio at times, with what sounded like military marching mx at 1355z, then operatic singing by woman at 1405z before fading.
Had a musical interlude of some sort on 640...maybe KYUK? Or a 639 Asian? There was a blistering strong carrier screwing up my opportunities for Bethel AK. They always have a musical interlude between NPR news and Morning Edition.
850 music sounded religious at 1358z...KICY Nome? Also faint pop music under KKOH at 1404z. Probably KNOM, but no webstream to confirm.

Lots of recordings to come! This was definitely a night that made the hobby of DXing fun.

Crainbebo,

This may explain it:

http://njdtechnologies.net/112416/

630 meters is from 472-479 khz and that is plenty
close enough to the AM band.

Jim-satx logged France-Inter on 162 khz last night
using his loop and sony 7600 from Texas...DX conditions
on MW-LW are superb right now.

BTW,congratulations.

Another new log, 11/23/16!

1220 - XEB Mexico City, DF; Mexican music barely on top of jumble, then ID in SS "XEB" and Mexico references, heard at 2100 PT 11/23. NEW #727, 100KW at 2,236 miles! This was a nice log, because 1220 is usually a mixture of 171 watt Salem, OR and two Californians (KDOW/KHTS). Not much else makes it through.
No WRPN-1600 last night, however ;) KQWB was still strong, along with old time radio on 900 (must've been CHML Hamilton, ON). CHML would be a relog.

How the band has changed, in terms of both other stations and man-made noise.

As a teen, I would often listen to XEB from Cleveland, OH, when local WGAR signed off at midnight. It would be very listenable most nights of the year and occasionally (but often enough so the DJ recognized me and put me on the air) I would call to request a song!

Here is their transmitter in 1963:

Ahh, the days before XEB got nationalized and wound up with IMER...

Yes, the Sistema Radiópolis came to an end due to the tax issues Rogerio Azcárraga and Pedro Mendizábal had with the government caused 660, 710 and 1220 to be spun off to the government while 970, 1470 and 1500 stayed with Rogerio, along with the three FM licences. Radio Fórmula was born, and it moved down Dr. Río de la Loza where they prospered until the '85 quake destroyed the building.
