Indians baseball on FM. Could someone beat 92.3 to the punch?

Alt rock is dead. No money in it. Not enough Mt Dew and Trojan ads to keep it afloat. It's not just a CLE thing. No alt rock in Chicago or NYC.

Surprisingly, Merlin Media has LMA'd the 88.7 frequency (which is also Channel 6) in Chicago and is planning to flip it to Alternative Rock as "Q 88.7." The only ways Alt Rock can live on anywhere is through the HD subchannels (which is already on 92.3 HD-2 and 100.7 HD-2), online only including Pandora, college and high school radio (i.e. WBWC, WJCU though AAA and WSTB), and a translator.

Really is such a shame. Formats like alternative and triple A can be so dynamic and really seem like they could appeal to men and women anywhere between 18 to 55 years of age. I get that the ratings and research don't reflect that, still doesn't make sense to me though. FM music radio is such a joke, it really is comically bad. It seems that everytime I flip through the dial I'm hearing the same artist....sometimes even the same song, on multiple stations at one time.

Why would CC blow up WMJI or WHLK. Both are solid ratings performers. WHLK costs practically nothing to operate. Why would anyone mess with that? The Indians want two things..... a good platform as Indians flagship.... and a big fat check from that platform. FM stereo and audio quality brings nothing to the broacast. In fact, I think the games sound BETTER on AM. Unless CBS (or someone else) opens their checkbook really wide, why would the Indians want to go off a 50kw blowtorch to get on a short-stick FM? As for speculations about Elyria stations becoming the de-Facto Cleveland flagship, fuggedaboudit. When/if Lanigan retires, I'd look for CC to find someone to fill that role. Could possibly be Nolan, maybe someone else. They're not going to kill off a cash cow like that without at least exploring Plan B and Plan C.

Never said there should be a pure alt-rocker anywhere. It's a niche format that doesn't bill well, and has modest at best ratings.

What I said was that should WMMS go 100% mancave/sports talk, that they should turn 106.5 into a rock station that plays everything from classic rock to metal to alt-rock and modern rock.

A mishmash rocker that plays a bit of everything would work, a pure alt-rocker, not so much.

Re: Indians baseball on FM. Could someone beat 92.3 to the punch?

The Lake is top 5 in the key radio demo....has no live personalities...thus very low cost of running the station...and is a money-machine. Why on earth would they change format?

Besides...by going a blend of classic, modern, and alternative rock you'd piss off 3 almost totally separate life groups. That kind of mix is the exact opposite of what makes logical sense. If you're trying to create a rock format that runs off everybody...you've found it.

Re: Indians baseball on FM. Could someone beat 92.3 to the punch?

The Lake today IS a mix of classic rock, hair band rock (Poison and Def Leppard style), alternative rock (mostly 80s and 90s era), and pop. Works very well. The only music they don't mix in is new AAA (like 107.3 used to play), and harder edged alt metal (which MMS, does play, when they play music). The Lake works because it's cheap to operate, is female friendly while still having some male interest. Adding in new metal would kill the station with female listeners. Right now the Lake about as close to a full on rocker you're going to get on commercial radio in 2012.

Especially in Cleveland. Alternative seems like It would work best in Cleveland, even more than York/Chicago/Etc, since we are supposedly the "Rock N Roll Capital of the world". I really wish there was a CD101 (102.5) Translator from Columbus up here.
