Indy TV Station To Air "Hoosiers" As Butler Reaches Final Four

In celebration of the Indiana-based Butler Bulldogs playing in the NCAA Final Four this weekend - which will be held in, incidentally, Indianapolis - My Network TV affiliate WNDY will run the 1986 film "Hoosiers" tonight at 8 PM. The president/GM of WNDY claims he has been "overwhelmed" by response from fans after announcing plans to air the Gene Hackman movie.

Sister station WISH, the local CBS station, will air the Final Four starting Saturday.

Should Butler beat Michigan State on Saturday night, it would not surprise me in the least if WNDY blew off their Sunday night programming to run "Hoosiers" again. Hell, maybe WISH might blow off its CBS lineup to air it on Sunday!

Very cool idea! For those who don't know, the big Championship Game scenes from Hoosiers
were filmed in the Butler University Field House.

WNDY is technically a "My" station, but operates almost as an independent.

WISH ran an absolutely terrible piece on their 10pm news yesterday, "March Madness Grips Butler Campus".

Butler is an understandably feel-good story, but I thought this piece was over the top gushing.

According to the story, WNDY had to pay rights to air the movie on its own station. So whether or not it previously aired as part of a scheduled "showcase," WNDY had to pay the studio to air it at their own desired time.

Well...

Butler defeated Michigan State

WISH TV will be one CBS affiliate with many eyes tuned in Monday night.

As a Hoosier, it would be so incredible if Butler could win the championship in their hometown. If it could be done anywhere, it would be Indiana.

I can't wait to see the numbers on how many Indianapolis TV sets will be tuned to WISH-TV on Monday night. Could it possibly be over 90%?

Doubt it. They have a fraction of the following that IU and Purdue have there.

It won't be over 90%, but I would bet it would be in the 55-65% range, enough to be higher than average for an NCAA final, but not higher than average for one of the teams' home market.

Butler obviously does not have the following of IU or Purdue, but it would be hard to imagine a higher level of general community excitement if one of them were playing tomorrow.

I have a copy of Hoosiers on VHS....a treasured possession, as I actually acquired it
in Indiana, shortly after it was released to video. Still holding up.

I wonder if a DVD would last 20 plus years, even if it is kept in good condition.
