I'm using the radio for the moment to see if anything changed on the local subchannels. One red flag did come up: WWYZ-FM 92.5 (Country 92.5) is simulcasting WHCN-FM's Forgotten Favorites (WHCN-FM 105.9 HD2) on their HD2 channel, with lesser sound quality and a few minutes behind the original. Why?

I'm also hearing something on WKCI-FM 101.3 HD2, playing a dance version of a Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney song. WTF?It's either a station or a show called Club Fusion.

I bought one on Black Friday, and so far I am disappointed with the results. You must have gotten all those stations during a tropo opening. There's no way even a good car radio would be able to get WPST all the way there all the time.

I am still getting WCCC in greenwich fighting the religious station when there is tropo... also another thing to mention is Airplane skipage.
I think this thing is not as good for improving the signal compared to a normal analog walkman as to getting rid of the sideband co adjacent channels. hence why WCCC is coming in.
I did get CCC pretty good in greenwich during the Blackout when 106.7 and 107.1 were out and or operating at lower power.

I also get radio 104.1 at the stamford train station muddy but its there and on the train in the stamford area using mdr-g57g headphones.

I was able to get WEBE 108 in HD in New Jersey the other night. Probably helps that there's nothing on 107.7 or 108.1. Its sensitivity is much more impressive than I thought.

Just imagine if all new cars came equipped with HD Tuner Selectivity... It would be interesting to see how this would effect ratings... maybe CCC could get a .1 in the Stamford Norwalk market... one day... not much of anything but It would be cool to see that.

WWYZ's HD2 had been MIA for a couple of months. The delayed Forgotten Favorites simulcast appeared in late November, but now the Classic Country stream is back.

I understand WPKX (97.9) Enfield/Springfield has an "alt country" stream on its HD2. I don't get up that way much and have never heard it for myself, so I don't know what its quality or playlist depth is. I do know that the Classic Country playlist is quite shallow and generally limited to monster hits, many of which were pop crossovers. If the alt country stream is better, I wish Clear Channel would open up an HD3 at 92.5 and put it there.

I have a number of good radios and bought the Insignia HD portable early this year. My take on it is that it is not exactly the miracle dx machine that it's being made out to be here. The deal with it is this: it's highly selective. Some radios are highly sensitive in that they can pull in a whisper from a hundred miles away. Some are selective in that they can distinguish between a strong local signal on 96.5 and a weak distant signal on 96.7. The best dx machines are both (the Grundig G8 is a fine example of a radio that possesses both attributes).

In an area that is congested with signals on practically every frequency, a highly selective but only moderately sensitive radio like the Insignia HD can seem like a champ because it picks up all of those marginal signals right next to stronger ones. I've noticed the same thing from my house near Chicago. I have much more sensitive radios, but some fail to pick up first adjacents to local FMs because they lack the selectivity.

In a nutshell, that's what's up with the Insignia. Great for metropolitan areas, but don't take it to the great north woods of NH and expect dx magic with it.

The G8 is one of the finest portable radios I have ever laid my hands on. I can not believe how selective and sensitive this radio really is.
I live in a RF hell hole and can not believe I don't hear a peep of overload on it. For $50 from Radio Shack, you can not go wrong with it.

Agreed 110%! Radio Shack had them on sale after Thanksgiving for $29 and I bought 2 more - it's that good of a radio, and an absolute bargain. I've literally had it outperform my car radio on both bands. Unbelievable little radio, picks up FM signals that none of my other gear can detect. The G3 (also bought on sale at RS), on the other hand, was promptly returned for a refund. That one was a big disappointment.

Fiddling around with these radios AND being able to travel quite a bit offers a good opportunity to experience the different reception characteristics of what's available. I have a couple of radios (the Katio KA-1101 for example) that are very sensitive but not that selective. At home, their reception is fine but not pack-leading. Take them out in the hinterlands and it's shocking what they can pull in when there are no strong adjacents.
