Interesting article on the sad STATE OF EDM IN AMERICA, some excellent points

we discussed the downfall of current dance here years ago, and nothing has changed since, so nothing will change, so get over it already...
and when people are on the floor while sean kingston, pussycat dolls and rhianna are pumping through the sound system, no one is thinking of them as 'dance' artists,; they are percieved as pop, r&b or reggae stars...so there you go...

I found this article to be interesting and wanted to share - no need to the a jerk with the response.....

Obviously you are quite clueless if you think things would never have the possibility of changing here.....things seem to be moving in the right direction.....slowly.....but moving all the same.....whether you agree with it or not.

btw, I moved to Spain....so I 'got over it' a long time ago, but still interesting to see what others think about the industry in the US.....
 
This article is dead on with what is happening in our musical culture in America. Could not describe it any better. I've always wondered why parents would let their teens enjoy and listen to hiphop that describes how to do things they really aren't mature enough or ready enough to handle and in great detail versus dance music that for the most part drives home deep emotions about relationships without the raunchy "how-to" lyrics of hiphop. Dance is a much better alternative and I know kids would love it if they played it on radio. My teen listens to dance with me! But doesn't think it's "cool" music because Q-96, The Party or HOT 105-5 or 1079 Jamz ain't playing it (though I catch her singing along once in awhile ;) --- but guess what, you are right, it is slowly coming around. I heard 3 dancy songs on Jamz this morning, Calabria, Poker Face and Kid Cudi's Crooker Mix plus hiphop is going more upbeat dancy with better lyrics.

I digress, great article and completely says it right! America is such a force fed culture. We are so gullible and ignorant and it's too bad we tend to like it that way!

What you are saying has been said about music for 60 plus years. Elvis and Rock n Roll were the devil. The rock in the 60's was about doing drugs and having sex. Hip-hop is all gangster. Dance music has a ton of sexual innuendos in it. I guess you are missing some of the big records club records in the 90's like F on cocaine. A pure dance fan cant forget those. There is a ton of dance records that have explicit lyrics.
Things are getting better. The music is more rhythmic and we have to stop saying what is dance and what is not. There are pop artists here in the states that are dance artists.
 
Let's get real practical with my statement. Listen to Vibe 94.5 in Vegas for an hour and listen to ANY hip hop station, big market, small market, for an hour and compare the lyrical content. The scales will tip HEAVILY in favor of VIBE being much more decent by far than any hip hop station.
 
The article is nothing new. A lot of it, right and wrong, have been said before. Some facts are incorrect or mis-stated at best. It's an ok article that some will like, others will say "and this accomplishes what?". Also, the use of "good music" is too subjective and broad a topic to be taken seriously. Good music is up to an individual and cannot be something that is determined by one for one.

In most of the country, dance music is unknown. For example, a CD store in Pittsburgh had no "dance" section. In the New York metro, dance is popular. New Jersey is the state with the most area covered by dance stations. You can hear 3 dance stations in NJ (4 if the weather's right), as well as specialty shows and even a few pirate dance stations. You can't say that for any other state.
When I went to Miami, I was amazed at how popular dance music was in South Beach. You could hear dance music blasting from stores on every block, cars were blasting the latest dance hits, and every nightclub has at least one night of dance music. It made it feel like "dance music was alive".
I'm going to go to Atlantic City for the DJ Expo, I want to see the impact of a huge congregation of dance fans will have on the area. Will it turn Atlantic City into Miami, we'll find out!

Atlantic City is nothing like Miami even during the DJ Expo. You won't find dance music in the streets or a massive amount of clubs playing our music. What you will find is the gathering of America's Dance community mixing business and fun. You'll find a great Promo Only party with some of the biggest names in current music performing. You find a couple of seminars that may open some eyes as to how things are as opposed to how they are perceived. Again, it's a great gathering but it's very different than Miami. It's more like what the WMC was when it started 25 years ago.

I'll just say this:
When it comes specifically to sound and style, we are definitely headed in the right direction. We've only been getting closer and closer to "the sound" since 2006. As of right now, anything could happen, and we have reason to be hopeful, so lets embrace and take advantage of the moment TODAY as much as possible.

This is just a brief summary of my thoughts, and that's all I have to say regarding this topic at the moment.
