Interesting News Story about CBS Radio Stations

Re-posted from https://www.facebook.com/notes/in-the-tradition-wcuw-913fm/its-time-for-music-stations-to-id-the-music/200287010015926

When I came across the article linked below, my first reaction was "it is 'normal' for radio stations not to identify artists and song titles?" I must be further removed from mainstream pop cuture that I thought.

WCUW's "In the Tradition" hosts Bettie Carlson, Patrick Moriarty, John Henry, Russ Bellemer and myself not only give listeners artist and song information, we post that information to Spinitron - see http://www.spinitron.com/radio/playlist.php?station=wcuw - or access via wcuw.org and click on "playlists".

Russ and I also post our show information to the Folk DJ list - http://lists.psu.edu/archives/folkdj-l.html Through our efforts, Si Kahn, was the Folk DJ'

TOP SONG OF 2010
TOP ALBUM OF 2010
TOP ARTIST OF 2010

Details at http://notlobmusic.blogspot.com/2011/01/si-kahn-sweeps-3-folk-dj-list.html

And of course if you ever have questions or comments, your calls to the studio - 508-753-2284 - are always welcome.

It's time for music stations to ID the music? Really!

I always ID the song, artist, and if possible album title on my blues show. I post playlists on New England Blues Society yahoo group, etc. It's important to the artists and listeners. Have heard shows on college radio, etc. where they don't bother to do this. I can see if they're playing songs and artists everyone knows, but a DJ's job is to say what was played and it's important to plug any artist ESPECIALLY ones people don't really know yet. "When You Play It, Say It". It doesn't take long. We work with artists including interviews, giveaways, concert reports, etc.

Yes this info does come over on the Web stream but most people are listening to a radio, not online.

Sometimes as a song is playing I'll do a quick look up of info online. "That was Macy Blackman and the Mighty Fines with a cover version of 'Hello My Lover' by Ernie K Doe. That's on their CD 'Don't You Just Know It'. We know Ernie from 'Mother in Law'. btw interestingly enough, did you know he's buried in the same tomb in New Orleans with, among other people, one of his mothers-in-law?"

OK, so I got into some trivia too but at least I said the song title and artist, etc. Occasionally even though I do same the artist names and song titles I'll get a call from someone who was half-listening to my talk break and must have missed what I said: "Excuse me, that song you played about 5 minutes ago, with the male and female lead singers going back and forth--what was that?"

People want and need to know. And it can spur sales. Someone might go onto cdbaby or amazon,
or into their local store. In my own case, I would listen to, say, airchecks of the folk show from
WKSU at Kent State and Jim Blum would play funny songs by a group called Modern Man. I wouldn't have known the name of the band ---and would not have bought 3 albums from them--
had Blum not bothered to mention who they were.

If your station uses Spinitron, listeners not only can see the playlist in real time (as well as archives of past shows), they can click through to the internet sellers. And the stations get a few cents of the transaction, too.

Do they cover the Huey "Piano" Smith and the Clowns song "Don't You Just Know It," as well?

(Ah, ah, ah, ah...)

...Mix rarely does this these days. Will we be seeing a change to this at all?

You'd figure it would be tried on the smaller markets first... then again, CBS doesn't really delve with "small" markets much these days... Certainly, they're not going to start right away with this on, say, a CBS-FM.

I had several thoughts on this when I read it, how is this benefiting CBS (Payola anyone?). I know that many small & college radio stations post their song IDs to show what song they are playing usually for their listeners. I know I like it when I hear a particular song that I like that I can find out the song and artists so I can find the record to play on my show.
I've gotten calls from people asking who did a particular song i played. WMFO uses Spinitron and we are required to post the song we play as we are playing it.
