Is Don Martin KILLING Fox Sports Radio

I asked this on the sports format page but it is also a LA story

Is Don Martin killing FOX sports radio? WLAC

Seems Fox WAS doing great.
but since they have become a "national LA station" not sure it is working?

Rumor has it that more and more FOX affiliates are sick and tired of local LA hosts and local LA topics taking up the most of the national air time .....
(and affiliates now jumping ship to ESPN)

Perception is that Martin cares more about his local staion in LA than Fox Sports Radio.
And FOX is supposed to be, a network that covers national sports.
(The best sports radio hosts covering the best sports topics)

I am a fan of sports TALK radio and of Fox Sports Radio
I even like the LA point of view, just not srue nationally everyone does?

but it's not working in L.A is it? Why did KLAC:s cume go down from 905 000 to 440 000?

seems to me the guests they have are mostly LA driven, especially in the 3-7 LA time slot....they still steer towards LA...not enough to be a completely local station, but not national enough to not be a LA station.

The answer is YES! I hate that KLAC went "national," but it was bound to happen when the Lakers jumped ship to KSPN. Don Martin has done a terrible job at KLAC. This is the guy that changed the morning show time and time again. Hired Joe Grande to do afternoon drive and for over two years did not provide sports updates on a SPORTS STATION. Brooks Melchior of sportsbybrooks.com predicts that within a year Fox Sports Radio will be gone! Being based in L.A. is no excuse because Sportingnews Radio is also based in L.A. and they do provide national perspective. The worst show on FSR/KLAC is Petros and Money. How does Don Martin think that show will play in middle america. The only reason Clear Channel has not fired Don is because he is married to KFI PD Robin Bertolucci.

I would take anything that Brooks says about FSR with a grain of salt, he's been
on 710 as a fill-in host and it would be a shock for him to support the rival station.

He is right in that FSR is a slow-running travesty. First Don Martin pulls the night
show with Joe McDonnell (that wasn't a bad thing) and replaces him with
Tony Bruno. Then he takes Bruno off and puts in JT temporarily. Then he
moves JT back and puts Bruno back in again.

The Petros and Money show might not fly nationally, but it has some traction
with targeted demos in the SoCal area. If people can get through Petros'
screaming, the show is a favorite amongst the younger crowd who are
receptive to the preachings of keen-eye-observer Money.

Yeah but the point is that FSR is a national sports radio network and Petros & Money is NOT a national show. KLAC's numbers are in a free-fall. I also think FSR won't be around in a year or two. Joe McDonnell love him or hate him the guy always find a gig. He is doing weekends now on Sportingnews Radio although no L.A. station carries SNR.

Who is this ROBIN BERTOLUCCI ?????

Do you think DON MARTIN reads this board ???
or will co workers tell him about this?
will he care ?

Robin Bertolucci is the program director of KFI. She's Don Martin's wife. Does he read this board, don't know. Doubt he'll care.

It's likely that Don Martin doesn't have time to read this board nor does
he really care because he's probably on a golf course somewhere.
Thankfully for Sheron Bellio, who used be the superb
radio producer for the Lakers for many years, will stay
in the CC family as the producer for Bill Handel's early afternoon show.
Relocation to the new gig is just down the hallway.

this topic seems to have gotten several views
do you think it is because Don Martin is well kown in radio circles?

gotta say I was miffed when Petros and Money replaced Andew Siciliano and Crystal Fernandez, Andrew is way smooth, but Petros and Money is growing on me, better than anything we have on sports talk here in Birmingham Alabama

where petros and money and all the current KLAC people hired by Martain?

does he have the power to hire and fire and will ?

I read the message board and it asks about Martin
and turns in hate this and hate that ... lol

not how BRUNO is doing???
I am also kind of surprised people hating on his girlfriend?

I do think BRUNO gets paid .. he is not going to do this for free?
I do not think stations are tying to DUMP BRUNO
I do not think Don Martain is having second thought about BRUNO
I do not think Ben Maller is trying to get BRUNO'S job or girlfriend

SInce the first of the year, CC has placed FSR on many more of their stations. Granted, they may be under-performing and in some cases signal challenged AM stations, but it's PPM friendly content that's a heck of a lot better than colon-blow show alternatives. As a manager at an FSR affiliate, I wasn't exactly jazzed with all the Lakers references when it re-made itself last January. Perhaps a little too many LA references remain, but they are more concious of it. But I could also argue that this years big sports stories have been Lakers (Kobe/Championship) and Dodgers (Manny). That's not a bad thing.

As for the "CC stations are dropping FSR for ESPN" assertion, I'd like to see some facts. One or two small markets, or an FSR afiliate taking Mike and Mike is not a big deal. One reason there won't be wholesale CC defections to ESPN: see first paragraph. Another reason: CC manager would have a lot of explaining to do - dropping a CC product for someone else's? I don't think so. Yet another reason: other than Mike and Mike, ESPN radio blows. The only thing it has going for it, and I admit, it's a VERY BIG THING, is the ESPN brand. Still, FSR ain't going away.

Finally - Petros and Money. An aquired taste. And the daypart most likely to be pre-emptedby other affiliates...not because of their show, but because much of the Central and and East coast time zones (where I think you'll find the majority of FSR affiliates) are running play by play. For the west coast, it's the daypart that most likely has a local show. Therefore, it makes sense for that show to be the "most local" of all at KLAC.

Class dismissed.

Evem PPM could tie in stories by compairning the LA team to the Boston team or Miami

The KLAC / FSR merger was a survival move FOR Don Martin. Either do this or go out with everyone else. Too bad in that when it was done, no one was left happy. L.A. Locals hated the 'national vibe' (and Chris Meyers - worst ever), and other markets can't possible dig all the lakers & usc talk. Having lived in the mid-west, I can't possibly imagine PMS lasting more than 5 minutes on the dial. I actually enjoy them in small segments, but petros' "screaming" and money & his 'pop culture know-it-all' can't possibly fly.

The crystal ball sees 570 getting busted up december 15th...
