Is it just me or is Party 105 playing more dance than they ever have??

Listening to Party 105 over the past week or so they seem to be about 75-80% dance or so (outside the mixshows) and the vast majority of it is new dance. They have always had times when they have gone back and forth playing more dance than other times, but for the most part it seemed like they were at most 60-65% dance. So is it just me or is Party 105 playing more dance now than they ever have??
______________

They seem to have decided to take a stand; many years ago, when young Vic The Latino(he has since left "The" in Florida for contractual reasons)used to visit me at Jimi LaLumia's Record Connection,I would explain to him that Party's programming was playing a losing game.Every time they played a hard hip hop record, they lost the dance crowd;every time they played a house record, the thugs were outta there;neither audience was properly catered to.Young Latino took "Yoda's" advice and headed for greener pastures anyway,(let's face it, the kid is,indeed,a "****STAR***),and Party then careened wildly back and forth for years...
Now, they seem to'be about something',and with much less of the'in crowd' chatter("Joey Bajagaloop is hanging out with Donnie Donuts"etc.),which always excluded and served as a turn off to the larger audience that I'm sure they want(listeners don't want to be outside with their nose pressed up against the glass, they want to be 'inside' with the radio guy),they seem to be onto something. It sounds REAL good!and I have called them on it when they were weaker, and I'll now give credit where credit is due,cos that's the kinda guy I am(and besides, they're using "DanceFloor'/"Last Call" in a hot sounding commercial bed!

WITHOUT QUESTION! They have VASTLY improved! Out of all the years Party 105 has been on the air, I have NEVER heard it as good as this! Breaking out the new Lucas Prata/Reina, Judge Jules, Hi-Tack and MUCH LESS hip-hop, the station sounds incredible! And this is EXACTLY what is pissing me off about New York City and this whole 'KTU/Mix 102.7 oldies battle.

Do they even REALIZE how they can get a BIGGER audience with a station playing currents like 105?

Andre....thank you for thinking what appears to be "outside of the box" for radio. THIS is what a dance station has to sound like!

Party 105 is EXCELLENT! The best I've ever heard it!

I was one of those that stayed around for it. I am a big fan of both genres, and what actually got me into dance was Party through their hip hop. When i would go out to the Hamptons in the late 90's (so this was pre Hot 93.7 in hartford) their was no hot 97 so I would flip on Party for some hip hop & the dance grew on me. I always thought they did a real good job att mixing the hip hop & the dance (especially when they were in the 65% dance, 35% hip hop angle. Even though I am a huge hip hop fan, when they started going towards 75% hip hop I didn't like the station as much. I think their should always be some amount of hip hop in Party's mix (because its such a big part of the Long island club scene as well), so I'm not sure how I would feel if they went 100% dance, because I think it would be missing something. However right now the station musically sounds just amazing, (hopefully they will add more dj's) and its the best the station has ever sounded musically imo.
______________

I think you are unique,Tim; the hip hop crowd ain't having it,is Cascada getting programmed on Hot 97 ? The hip hop stations take a stand, and they succeed, and I think Party should take the same stand; one or two hip hop records isn't going to bring over the thugs,it just breaks up the continuity. They'd be better off with sprinkling 70s, 80s and 90s classics throughout(I've Heard "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer more than once, and that's a step in the right direction, especially with summer coming.) ...Add more djs?..as long as they don't sound like Joe Bajagaloop and Donnie Donuts, then maybe they should, right now they're steering clear of that "Live! From The Teen Center" thing, and that's a good thing! Andre sounds bright and inspired, and it's all good(so far.)

Hmm, maybe we've got 101.7 The Blaze/Beat to thank for this. Since all the hip-hop crowd have gone to WBEA, maybe Party 105 have decided to concentrate on what the do best (Which is what KTU should have done). Any news on when the stream is going to be available?

not sure about the stream, but speaking of the beat even they are throwing in Cascada. In respomnse to Lulima's point. I'm not saying they shoukld have some of the herder edges stuff Hot 97 does, I think they are fine the way they are. IMO they are MUCH better off by having the few hip hop records they have than playing 70's or early 80's dance (we have KTU & Mix). I think in part its a market to market thing. On Long Island the combination of some hip hop on a mostly dance station will work because the audience is their for both, as I mentioned you have that club element on Long Island where both genres are fixtures in the Long Island clubs. Again I'm not talking bou the harder edges hip hop, but the ral big hits, the club anthems (though its reggae Sean Paul's "Temperature" is an example & the song is huge out here in the clubs. Thats the type of dynamic I'm talking about, that stuff surrounded by mostly dance is what makes Party so unique & sound so good. I think they would lose some of that dynamic if they dropp the hip hop/reggae product they do have, and replaced it with 20 year old or more dance product, you lose that edge the station has.

PARTY 105 IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

All pure currents for NYC. metro

The thing is that now you have so much hip, hop on Long Island with the 2 Hartford stations, HOT 93.7 and POWER 104.1 not to mention Long Island's own the Beat 101.7. There is no longer such a need for hip, hop coverage on the east end especially further west with all the NYC. hip, hop beaming in.
Party should stick with all dance...
...we don't need another KTU with currents, classics and hip, hop!
We have 3 dance stations within an 85 mile radius and all inside what is considered the New York City Metropolitan Area! Can just one of them be pure current dance please??!!!

I hear you, but my suggestion was geared toward greater success and ratings than they've previously had,you can listen to college stations for edge....and it's La Lumia, by the way.

Lalumia :)

You make some valid points, but I think the combination they are doing now (with some, but a limited amount of hip hop) would be better suited to go with the station's new dance product then the old stuff. I'm not saying it because of my own personal taste, but the Long Island market as a whole, where a large amount of the people who like dance also like some hip hop & reggae as well, and really aren't into the older classic 70's stuff. I'm speaking from the 18-34 target demo prespective

PARTY 105 IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's 2 capitol L's in La Lumia!(by the way, the `18-34 radio demo(as opposed to a 'club demo") LUVS 70s/80s/early 90s classics on the radio, for whatever reason. In all my years of successful club work,I learned one thing early on, and I've said it on this board many times; People don't always know what they like, but they sure do Like what they Know!

Yeah, and I do agree with you to an extent Jimi.

People do like what they know, yes. But in order for them to know it in the first place, they had to be introduced to it at one point or another. It wasn't as if 80's freestyle and 70's disco was always around. And using New York, 92/KTU and Hot 103/97 had to break out the music first...and they've done a helluva job doing that for those songs to be "imbedded" into the minds of the "casual" dance fan; the one that either has no or DOESN'T want a clue to what is current and happening today. Which is why the current 'KTU and Mix 102.7 exists and are battling for ratings that just aren't there anymore.

That's why a station like Party 105 is a blessing. They do introduce the new music to the core fans that are up on it, and perhaps grab a new following of dance music in the process.

I agree with you, Tony,to an extent: the best way to get new music over to people is covertly, sandwiched in between that which they already know: if they accept and make hits out of even two dance currents every month with stealth programming, that's a bigger victory, than turning the average listener off with TOO MUCH(new and unfamiliar) INFORMATION.
The stealth program worked for decades at 77WABC AM and continues to work at the once again dominant Z100,currently regaining it's ruling position In NY,Long Island, New Jersey & Conn.
