Is it me or has the quality of news gone to crap?

Was in Phoenix on business and tuned into 550 AM and 92.3 FM for old times sake.....what the hell happened to their news product? KTAR has a bunch of teenagers stumbling over their words and KFYI has like one reporter?

Some of the teens on 92~Three should be back in high school finishing their education. Jeez...this is the Edward R Murrow award winning news department. But of course, they have no clue as to who he is...let alone Walter Cronkite. Nurse Jeff and I chuckle every time they say "KTAR forecast...it's (xx) degrees". Since when is the temperature a forecast? Anyone remember Ed Phillips?

KFYI is I ♥ minimal staff and maximum syndication. What can we say?

It's not you. Both have gone to crap, and no one cares!

Sure they know who Walter is. He's a building on the ASU campus. How's the Republic these days? Lots of local news?

Everybody wants the best quality, and they want it for free. Champagne taste, beer money.

You want quality journalism? KJZZ.

I’ve been irritated enough for quite a while that “it has been reported...” now passes for news or journalism. Add to that a difficulty articulating a coherent thought and I simply won’t listen (or watch, or read). KJZZ does a _much_ better job in that way. They have their point of view, as does everyone, but they normally do quality work pretty well across the board.

It's not just you. Once 92.3 pulled the plug on news coverage on the weekend (essentially putting its news team on recess from the end of Mac & Cheese on Friday until Monday morning), it became inevitable you'd still be hearing 3-day-old, 4-day-old stories still being promoted as "news." I 'get' that news is whatever the presenter says it is, but if the 'news' story is so "old" (by news cycle standards) that it was already published in hard copy of the local newspaper, it might be a good idea to yank the script.

KJZZ, or NPR? Or both? I very rarely (if ever) hear refer to that station by its call letters. Yes, NPR does not a better job. As for KJZZ - the jury's still out.

They both call themselves "Newsradio". Forget about hearing any "News" on the weekends. It's part-timers delight.
If you want infomercials, they got 'em! Everything from get rich quick schemes, health supplements, ....to car repairs.

And they're making money for programming that draws close to nothing. Maybe a few hundred each, out of almost 5 million people in the metro, but I can't see too many folks bothering with this drivel.

I got to spend some time in the KJZZ news room awhile back. It's filled with these folks called "reporters." Developing stories. Doing research. Contacting sources. Their staff appears to take their jobs very seriously and are focused on journalism rather than just "content" that drives clicks.

I'm at a loss to point out another public radio station that has a mid-day news magazine program that's 100 percent local reporting. "The Show" seems to be unique in that respect.

Well, I'm at a loss to find anyone who says they listen to "KJZZ" or "91.5" when what they're really saying (and accurately so) is they listen to "NPR." The branding simply isn't there. It just isn't, and I stand by that sentiment. Anytime I (or literally anyone) tunes into 91.5, it's typically for the BBC newscast or Weekend Edition or "Ask Me Another." Even WITH the frequent story in the local newspaper, the average listener has no clue that there's any non-NPR, KJZZ-originating content except for Corritore's blues show. KJZZ is as identified with NPR as 92.3 is with (non-local) Ramsey. Is KJZZ making an effort to let people know there's non-NPR content on 91.5? That's questionable.

I meant KJZZ. NPR also does a good job, but I meant KJZZ.

Even I have been ‘cold-called’ by KJZZ’s news people on multiple occasions to ask questions or request an interview about something they found of interest to their listeners. And they promote their HD2 channel!
