Is it possible if we had the money and a Petition?..Bring back I-100

They say all radio stations are technically always for sale if the price is right???? Of course me, and probably no one on this board could ever do it,,, What would it take to by the 100.3 frequency, and take back the I-100 Calls... Im not sure what format it should be if we could do it.. Could we make it current Top 40 music, but hotter than Star 102.1, and not Rap Hip Hop like hot 104.5,,, Maybe a Rock/CHR Hybrid...... Do you guys think most of the original listeners of the old WOKI have long moved out of the demo, and aged into another format??????? What would you guys try if you owned WOKI with the 100.3 signal???? And is their anyway that with the right amount of money, someone could revive it?????????

Pirkle will not sell the 100.3 frequency at any amount period. Sorry but buying 100.3 from JP, and bringing back I-100 is a pipe dream. It's not going to happen.

Pirkle even had $25 million offered to him years ago for 100.3 one time and he turned it down. I have even heard someone offered him a blank check and he turned it down also.

As for the I-100 era you may have only gotten to hear the station during it's I-100 days which were from 1988 to 1993. However, there is a lot more to the history of WOKI as a Top 40 station such as the "FM 100" and "HITS 100" era, and the station sounded much better during those those two time periods as far as programming and talent was concerned. I was not a fan of Brother Clay's programming I will admit.

Actually the station's talent and programming started going down the toilet bowl around 1986 when Ron Harper was the PD. WOKI's best days as a Top 40 radio station were from 1981 to 1986. After 1986 the programming and talent on WOKI was very mediocre compared to the earlier golden days of WOKI when you had on air talent like Brother John and Shotgun Stevens back during the early and mid 80's.

JP is very rich. And anyone rich enough to separate him from 100.3 didn't get that rich by doing stupid things like ressurecting 20 year old radio stations that could never finish any higher than 4th when they were here the first time.

Let it go. Brother Clay is a she. Shotgun Stevens is doing country. Jeff Jarnigan is programming a real radio station. Julie London is making real coin selling TV. Brother John has just been fired again somewhere. Ray Edwards is out west somewhere running a cluster. No one seems to know where J.J. is and Jerry Howell is a traffic God in Alabama or somewhere. Bill Hayes, who ran the station is in the porn business. And Johnny has enough problems to be perfectly content to cash the big checks from Citadel.

I-100 is dead and it ain't every coming back the way you remember it. And if it did, you would be really disappointed because it would not come close to the radio station you think you remember. Because it was never as good as you obviously remember it. I know. I was there.

Just to add to the denial, Pirkle cannot sell the 100.3 frequency to a competing group while Citadel's LMA is still in effect. Citadel also has the right to match any offer for a sale at the end of the LMA.

Bottom line is, Pirkle isn't willing to sell, and in this economy, there's not a company out there that can afford to pay what he would ask. He wasn't even willing to sell the 94.3 peashooter to South Central this summer when they made an offer before re-upping their LMA.

Now, when the station is eventually passed on to his heirs, all bets are off.

You guys all make good points... JP is probably loving the fact that he doesnt have to physically do anything to the stations,,but yet he gets to collect the money while Citadel runs it... Jp is very old now, and he is probably keeping hold of the station to ensure a future for his family, rather than a quick buck, Im sure he probably has kids,, and either has, or has had a wife at some time. And again,,, its quite possible that they are making more money running automated talk other than paying local DJs and Music Royaltys..... And even if I did have the millions it would take to purchase 100.3,,,, which like you guys say is impossible... I wasnt even considering hiring the former staff back,,,, Why would they want to move back to K-town Anyway,, and I couldnt use the same playlist they used to have,, that would get stale fast.. Who owns WWST,,,Didnt Pirkle used to own the old Stay 93.1,,,When WOKI format moved to the weak signal in 1993,, and put country on 100.3? So does Pirkle still own WWST???????

I worked at WOKI when Citadel was buying the Dick family properties.
As I remember, Pirkle is the reason that WOKI was not part of the deal.
The story goes that Pirkle wanted to change the price on the LMA at the 11th hour and Citadel didn't want to pay the difference.
So we had 100.3 The River for a while as a Dick property, renting building space from Citadel and paying a hefty LMA to Pirkle and still somehow staying out of the red.
In the end all it did was prove that Citadel could still make money paying Pirkle what he wanted...so they picked up the station and 100.3 The River (as we knew it) became a thing of the past.

*But here's the real lesson:

If you were there at the time, you remember the HUGE public outcry when we announced we would be leaving.
The listeners had petitions, e-mail campaigns... they even contacted Citadel management directly.

In the end, the River ran dry. The public effort had no effect.

WOKI is what it is. You can't get it back to what it once was.
Radio is a business with no place for sentimentality.

First, find the money that can be made... if you can find a way to make money from those glory day memories - more power to you.
Pirkle knows that he can't deposit "warm and fuzzy" in his bank account.
Citadel knows that too.

hey all,
first please read my post the complete woki 100.3 story. brother clay is a he and he was my cousin. so back in the 1980's, i was able to learn alot about the radio business and it was something i knew i never wanted to get into . LMA and JOHNNY PRIKLE. he owns 100.3, 93.1 and 94.3 !!! 93.1 costs journal 3,000 a month, 94.3 costs south central 3,000 a month and 100.3 costs citadel 5,000 a month. that means johnny has an income of 11,000 a month and he isn't going to part with that income until the day he dies.

I actually had a chance to talk to Johnny Pirkle here awhile back,,, He asked me not to mention how or why,,, but what he told me is he only owns 94.3,, which he leases to South Central,, I believe he gets money from Citadel for 100.3, he didnt mention anything about 93.1,,, that means nothing I realize, but wouldnt he have told me if he had some ownership in 93.1,,, I know he used to own it back in the Z-93 and star 93.1 days, but I dont think he even owns the lease anymore.... I promised him I would not give out any more info than that... thanks for understanding.

I'm fairly certain that Pirkle sold 93.1 to what was then known as Jaycor around the time they flipped to Star for cash and Jaycor stock. Of course, Jaycor sold the cluster to Journal before morphing into Clear Channel.

Hope Johnny cashed in that stock long ago.

thanks all for updates,
i talked with my cousin and found out that i was wrong!!! sorry!! i miss understood him. WCYQ was sold when it was change to star 93.1 at the end of the lease. the jaycor company did not want to play anymore lma money to johnny and ask how much for the station. not sure how much johnny got but i bet it was a good price and he made profit in the deal. question!!! is jaycor and clear channel the same company or is journal and clear clannel the same company?? please someone explain!! i am confused!!! ??? ???

Jaycor was Clear Channels old name... I dont think Journal is related,, it could be a spin off Company, but I kinda Doubt it...
