Is it time for the Rock of New York to return?

Imagine if the real WNEW returned? I'd imagine an Active Rock version of 'NEW, so it could mix in Classic, Hard Rock and Alternative. What do ya'll think?

Normally, I don't care for the mixing of Classic Rock and current Rock. However, at this time, it would work. I'll be shocked if there isn't a Rock station by the end of the month.

What about the argument that New York isn't really a Rock town? (Incidentally, I believe Rock works best in this market when it's integrated into a broader format like CHR/Pop, like the time Z-100 had a hybrid Modern Rock/CHR format back in the early to middle '90s).

Yeah, sometime, when the time is right

Sorry, I don't buy that New York just isn't a rock town, never have. But it is always an open question about how many rock stations the market will demand given limited frequency space in a market like New York, competing demands for other formats, or what type of rock format should be aired.

Z-100's hybrid of modern rock and CHR was right for the times, but it doesn't seem right for 2006.

Rock has lost a lot of listeners to hiphop nationally, especially young male listeners. Also, the most interesting rock now doesn't seem (to me at least) to have such great broad market appeal as it did in the past. (My $0.02, feel free to disagree.) Maybe commercial (terrestrial) radio and rock are just sort of diverging, at least for the time being?

Look at how CHR is doing these days -- pretty well, overall. Ten years ago some people were saying Top 40's days were over, and I can recall a few major markets that just didn't have any CHR outlets. Actually, I think San Francisco still doesn't, but it has at various times since the mid-90s (e.g. Z95.7) Also, CHR stations in some markets (like Philly) seem to be struggling. But overall, CHR came back, thanks in part to a broader audience for hiphop, boy bands, maybe even American Idol, and lots and lots of successful celeb-singers like Britney, Beyonce, Christina, Kelly Clarkson, Jessica Simpson, etc.

Does any of this apply to rock? I think so. In terms of its commercial appeal, I'd be willing to predict a resurgence, but it would be a mistake to map commercial rock radio's future by going back to the past.

I think MIX 102.7 is here to stay...

The word is: Dayparting

If I were given the task of programming a rocker in NYC I would:

Morning drive:
Bring in a radio personality with potential but is hungry to become the next hottest voice in the market. I would get this person on the cheap (relatively.
Play 4 to 6 songs per hour - mostly classic rock.

Mid-day:

Active rock sound with a lot of DJ talk. No card readers.

Late Mid-day.

This is where I would like to have a female DJ. The rock becomes increasingly newer (80 new, 20 classic).

Drive home.

A duo would do well and play the best tested music.

Night.

All new music, very interactive (lots of Nu-metal and ALt.).

You will need to look under many rocks before you find one!

Sounds ok, but why not keep music beds playing to keep up the tempo?

Don't you thing a female would sound better at night? Remember the "Night Bird" from WNEW? (Allison Steele)

Problem with 2 people fighting for the air. It always leads to shouting and takes away from the overall listening experience. Also I can't stand the canned laughter at everything, even when it's not funny. It gets irritating, especially while driving in heavy traffic.

We have college radio for that. Could work though if the pick is right.

Ok care to speculate who that might be?.

Also anyone mentioning the alt incarnation of Z100 in the 90's?........well that just about destroyed Z100, PERSONALLY I LOVED THE WAY IT SOUNDED but Im a radio guy and not the audience..... I remember it wel, Depeche mode, New order, Nirvana, SNOPP DOGG.............Urge Overkill, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, MADONNA............bad idea, the problem was that the kids who wanted to hear "new york's new rock" didnt want to sit through evenn ONE Snoop Dogg song to get to it, same with madonna. Poleman had to raise the titanic to bring Z back to glory.

I think it would work very well, and would probably pull over a 5.0, the long, True, Active Rock thirst in the apple is ready to be quenched, if not on 102.7, than on another failing frequency, there are many to choose from. Same story here in Philly, bring on the 365/24/7 Active Rocker and burn up the ratings.

Ahh, the 77 ABC of my generation. (I'm 26). I really miss the way Z used to sound, you know back in the days when they won Rolling Stone Magazine's best radio station in the country award. Notice, that feature doesn't exist in Rolling Stone anymore, since every radio station now sounds the same...thanks corporate greed...anyway if anyone has tapes from that era I would love some copies of them...And please no lectures on the ratings, I understand that they weren't doing well in the flawless, reliable audience measuring system called Arbitron.

Yes, but it needs to be done.

The tempo is the New York audience.

Yes, it could work.

I've never seen fighting on air. NO CANNED LAUGHTER. It would not be an extension of the morning show. These guys would be like you buddies are in the back seat of your car.

College Radio can go very deep- keep in mind that commercial FM is still a medium for the masses.

The station I would suggest emphasizes the NYC community as its playlist. Heavy inter-activity. Lots of callers on the air. Everyday must be ifferent than the day before.

I hate hearing on air people reading cards like hey are just trying to get through the moment. I would only hire locals that hunger to be behind the microphone. This would take a lot of work but is worth doing.

Sounds good, just don't forget New Jersey!

But they would have to start from scratch. They should have put Free FM on 102.7 and just morphed KRock into a broader playlist to keep most of the listeners where they were at.

Time to Fine Tune my Stereos....

Looks Like it's time for me to do some antenna tuning to pickup WDHA over in Jersey much like what I used to have to do to pick up 'LIR. A pain in the ass...Yeah but WELL worth it. Or I could always pick up the stream through my stereo.

And without sounding like a "broken record" DLR has ENORMOUS shoes to fill. Give the guy a chance...as in more than a week. For someone that is a novice at this radio thing (and YES I do think this was an error in judgement by Infinity trying this in Market #1) I gotta admire his ba!!s to give this a shot. Time will tell. I certainly don't think IMHO that "Free FM" will do worse than JACK!!

There is some of my well-earned/well-spent Christmas cents!!!
