Is Santa Bringing HD Radio to a Store Near You ?

ElCheapo said:
The revelation that the rollout is on-track comes from last week's Radio World. The information they printed came from the HD Radio session at the recent NAB Radio Show in Dallas.

The people there said 2009-2010 would be the years for HD Radio's push into the mainstream.

Given the releases of new radios right now and the pace at which they're coming, I think that looks fairly accurate.

Oh my goodness  Let me make sure I understand this new brand of “marketing spin” correctly... After a decade on the drawing board, "The Cartel" concedes this year to be a “bust”... As will be next year (2007)... And even the following year—2008!

How many Program Directors working for much the same corporate crowd get, not one—not two, but three years in their struggling format to show an incremental increase in performance? You folks can answer that easy question I’m sure!

So 2009 is the new "rollout"? If I am to believe this projection, I must believe that a very dramatic change in the "broadcast culture" has also occurred. :-\ Even those so hopeful about the fortunes of AM-Stereo back in the 80s were not that myopic to the facts.

So I guess we can all break here for a year—make that several years, until IBOC HD finally makes its big splash.

Many branches of evolution are small, ineffective steps that die off as "unworkable".

For RF, remember these?
Damped Oscillations, MOPA designs, the TNT transmitter, the "interrupter", modulated CW, narrowband FM on HF, FM on 40 Mhz.

Anybody have any others to add?
Why were these abandoned? Too hard to control, not effective, too wasteful of BW, not effective for goals.

Santa doesn't like to disappoint people, so the sleigh will be full of analog radios this year.

GREAT... I can think of two or three that I'd like to see delivered this holiday season... GOOD radios ALWAYS make a very appreciated gift for me... But I don't think any of them mention IBOC on their spec sheets.

Tom... I did remember "narrow-band FM on H.F.", "modulated CW" (code...right?) and the 40mhz "Armstrong FM band"... I enjoyed reading about all, and scratching my head a bit... 'Seems 40-megs is again attracting a bit of attention ???

Hippo,

I was reading rec.radio.shortwave and came across a thread about the new RS 12-150 high-performance AM/FM/WX receiver ($49.95). Unfortunately, it smacks of the S350, weighing in at just one pound, also:

It seems a bit ironic, that RS would come out with this new radio, just as the Accurian HD comes out, and nighttime AM IBOC approval is looming on the horizon...

My old FCC attorney told me in a recent conversation... "IBOC at night IS NOT a given"... Seems there's this little problem with the folks up north of our border--in Canada--which use a different and superior digital broadcasting scheme on a dedicated "digital band". The "ayes" there don't use (or like) IBOC, and they guard their AM resources with a tenacious nature. Treaties mandate that we in the states respect their wishes (thank goodness)... So no IBOC without an international "summit". This talk about IBOC on-the-air at night at this time appears to be a "pipe-dream".

Canada is also persuading AM licensees to turn in their AM licenses in exchange for FM licenses.

Maybe they're trying to get out of the AM game?

Here's how persuasive they have been E-C... The CBC used to operate 50kw "clear" 740 in Toronto. It was recently sold to The CHUM Group LTD, and is now one of those "nasty" commercial stations... I believe playing a lot of Frank and Bing. Such is the case many other places in Canada, as the they head toward sat (for a very good reason--i.e. the great white north) and sell off their AM channels. Please note, though--there are no lack of interested parties in the room when these AMs go up for auction.

Yes and no. CRTC's goal is eventually to move all broadcasting to the FM band, but in the process all the AMs that go silent are still notified to the NARBA countries, meaning that their silence cannot be used as a reason for other stations to "let out" their directional patterns that protect those stations.

I suspect they would be regardless - they're trading them for FM licenses.
