Is the "Apocalypse" Nigh for Family Radio?

All right, let's put it another way. Name me one AM music station in any market of size that is successful on its own (without an FM counterpart). One.

WJIB in Boston - but of course that's a red herring, because it's run as much as a hobby as anything else. Licensed as a commercial station, but it doesn't sell spot time during the week, just some paid time on the weekends. Bob Bittner runs it entirely solo and mostly automated, and what expenses it has are paid for (and then some) by listener donations.

It's not the model we're all accustomed to, but it actually does work and provides useful service to an audience that's otherwise unserved, which is more than can be said for a lot of second- and third-tier AMs these days.

I used to think that the model couldn't easily be repeated, because when Bob bought the station at auction in 1992 for just $277,115, it seemed like a tremendous bargain in light of where station values went in the decade or so that followed. But we're getting back to the point where similar signals (WJIB is 250 watts day, low on the dial, and just 5 watts at night) can probably be had for somewhat similar prices again. At which point all you need is one guy with some money in his pocket and a dream...

I think KFRC's last incarnation on 1550 topped at 0.6, certainly not competitive with an FM, but not too bad either

I hear tell that in order to be profitable in this market a commercial station must pull at least a 2.0 in some demographic. I don't know how true that is, but it's obvious that 1550 as an oldies station didn't cut it or they wouldn't lave LMA'd it. In fact this is the only station in CBS's lineup that is LMA'd.

KVGC in Jackson. On a graveyard channel no less. But they're the only game in town. There are also some classic country stations in the Midwest that I know of. But you are right - they're few and far between, and I'm not disagreeing with you.

Jackson is not a "market of size". I specifically stipulated that because there will be some small town exceptions because otherwise there's nothing. Jackson also has an FM. Do you really know that an AM that has been on the air for less than 2 years with a 400 watt signal is actually making a profit?

Does 950 KAHI make any kind of profit, or are they too close to Sacramento to compete?

They fill a niche for their city of license but I'm not sure what they make for profit.

Based on their daytime pattern, they do a poor job of covering Sacramento. They do much better into Sacramento at night.

In almost every format you can kiss evenings goodbye as far as listeners go. The exceptions tend to be the "mood" stations such as the old "Quiet Storm" KBLX, and KOIT's "Love Songs After Dark", and stuff like that. Otherwise, people turn off their radios after 7pm and watch TV or their computer or they go out.

This was certainly the case at Energy. After 8 PM it was flatline. That was one reason the Karel Show experiment happened.

That may be what prompted Jelli on 3v1l 501.

I could see another potential owner for KEAR-610:

Bloomberg Media.

They have a 24/7 business news format which is heard on Bloomberg-owned WBBR-1130 in New York and on WXKS-1200 (which they lease from Clear Channel) in the Boston area. Additionally, some programs from that network are heard on various stations around the country.

Why do I think Bloomberg would be interested??

First, San Francisco is the business and financial center of the West Coast. Secondly, the big 610 signal is also strong in San Jose, which is the heart of Silicon Valley, the major technology center of the United States, if not the world (In fact, Bloomberg produces a daily show on the business of technology titled "Bloomberg West", which originates from Silicon Valley and which is broadcast on both Bloomberg Radio and Bloomberg TV).

Put like KQED on 610 - or have someone buy it

KQED Radio on 610 is an...dare I say...AWESOME idea. Or better yet, KALW. For KQED it would be a nice alternative to their horrendous multipath problem (why on earth does KQED broadcast in stereo?); for KALW it would increase their listening area tremendously.

Okay...but only if they'll use a slide whistle while reading the Bay Area temps on "Morning Edition"...and they have to feed Roscoe on the air at 6:10 sharp.

Funny, Michael. Really - best laugh all morning. Made funnier by the sound (in my head) of distinguished morning announcer Matt Elmore reading the temperatures in San RaQUEL, Sacratomato, and San Panty-Jose.

And of course, Johnny Mann Singers jingles... "Bom Bom Bom...Kaaaayyy--Q-E-Deeee..."

or....

"Bom Bom Bom BAA! Bommmmm...

Ladies and gentlemen, the news just keeps on comin'..."

"KQED-AM! San Francisco!"

New copy for Matt Elmore's first local cut-in:

"Weather today, kind of like Steve Inskeep's complexion...clearing up by noon (SFX: Cowbell)."

"Renee Montagne went out on a date last night. Guy had a motorcycle. He left her on it while he ran into a store to buy a pack of cigarettes. Left it running. She's sitting there...shaking back and forth...shaking back and forth....shaking back and forth.....finally another guy comes along and says "Can I turn that off for you?". She says "No, just kiss me." (SFX: "You've got a big, big mouth!").

"And go easy on David Greene this morning...he reached for the Preparation H and grabbed the Ben-Gay by mistake (SFX: Scream)."

"Finally, our thought for the day. (SFX: Echo chamber) Ego te hoc nomine......."It's easy enough to be happy when life is carefree and chipper; But the man worthwhile is the man who can smile when he catches himself in his zipper (SFX: "That's right!")."

Well, Hal Camping said that Family Radio was not intended to survive him, so it looks like they're winding down. The first 2 stations are rimshots and Garberville is a nice one, but without much power. Too bad they're all going to K-Love. Wish he was selling them to groups that could operate them as NPR/PRI stations.

Maybe Entercom can purchase the 860am signal and move 95.7 THE GAME to that frequency and open up 95.7 FM to country or adult hits.
