It's funny that NPR has plenty of weekend shows. In fact, back when NPR stations carried mostly music, the NPR programs were mostly on weekends. From Car Talk to Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me NPR has done quite well with its weekend programming. There are PLENTY of people who are listening to the radio on the weekend and the fact that talk radio stations haven't done a good job bringing these folks in doesn't mean that weekend programming doesn't matter. IMHO it is the best place to put someone like Maddow and other light programs from a syndicator. This could be a good way forward for AAR and they have tried from time to time but it may be that NPR has beat them to the punch. It's is truly a shame the way stations waste 48 hours of programming so I can be bombarded with how to buy a home for 50 bucks.

Well, it seems this sentiment is changing somewhat due to research, but you make an interesting point. Robbc is right about NPR, which couldn't do most brokered shows and wouldn't want to...
 
You think weekend programing is bad? Try coming on Monday morning after that stuff has run all weekend. Here we do a mixture of paid stuff and Air America. The paid stuff helps our bottom line. These days that's what it's all about.

Amen. The PPM will ultimately blow this out of the water, but even in diaries, take a look at the cume on Saturday mornings. Saturday middays too. It isn't till Saturday 3 pm that the weekend doldrums kick in, and of course the most listened-to weekend hours are the ones most stations prostitute out.

But if Dale J is on the money... isn't there something lopsided about a station making a huge chunk of its revenue when the fewest people are listening? Doesn't that eventually take the station down the slippery slope? Let's throw in some infomercials on weeknights, then afternoon drive, then early morning? (Don't laugh -- look at all those Citadel talk stations with "Ask the Expert" shows in middays and pm's).

That's the balancing act your going to have to watch, 6A-7P is where you are judged on success not Saturday at 8AM. If you can make some bucks with a mechanic show or real estate show on the weekends you do it.

Weekends can also be a good training ground for new talent, I got my start Sundays 8-10 on WSKY is Gainesville. Was it any better than an infomercial? No.

I'm not in the business. Never said I was, though a long time ago I was in radio news, then to a long TV news career...

Still, it doesn't matter if out-of-work hosts complain here. THey have a right to complain, because radio owners have largerly filled their "talk" schedules with plug-and-play satellite programming that's often uninteresting except to the die-hard politicos and lacks compelling local listener interaction.

For example, heritage station WIOD in Miami recently dumped Glenn Beck, moved him to evenings, and brought in a market talk veteran.
As much as I like Beck much more over Hannity and Limboob, the local guy's show is much more interesting to listeners because of the local/ regional focus and talent of the host.
The day the police had the city on lockdown (becoming more common now) after a vicious killer killed a cop, the local host provide compelling talk. I don't live in the town but can recognize great talk. This is great talk.

Stations that strip themselves of local talk and the chance for great listener interactrion are hurting not only themselves, but the industry overall.

Who is judging by 6 a - 7 p? Your listeners, who turn on their radio, hear a mechanic butcher the language because he paid his 50 bucks at the door, then turn it off?

Perhaps talkers should lobby the FCC to let them operate 6 A - 7 P M-F only. Or schedule polkas all night.

WTMA lists no paid shows M-F. WGOW is an abnormality, its an AM/FM combo/hybrid that competes against itself. And of that it appears that they have a lot of local stuff that fits the format until 7PM (exception: the financial show). Got any more?
