Is there any "GOOD" part time talent in Altoona? WHO??

Just wondering if there is any "good" part time talent in Altoona and curious as to who it is and what shift they work. Are they poised to go full time? Is there anyone looking for them to step in?
 
Take away the Dave Barger show on WRTA, and Caleb James on Mix 94.7 and the fulltime talent is pretty thin, let alone parttime.
 
At least the "thin" fulltime talent in both markets have jobs in radio..something that the majority...if not all of the people who post regularly on this board seem to lack...and most of them have held them down for quite a few years...
 
Hey! During the summer and early fall months, my fry wagon is running 6 to 7 days a week. Don't tell me about fulltime jobs!
 
I have to admit this was a baited question to see if anyone would dare to promote themselves. No one did so so it's nice to see there are no ego's out there.....except for the full timers mentioned on this topic. Looks as if some self promotion DID occur. I was just interested to see if there was any potential part time talent out there that could move up if there was a need in the future. By the looks of things, a station in this market will have to go outside of the market to get someone to fill a full time slot...if there is such a thing anymore.
 
The full-timers mentioned were not promoting themselves. And they both deserved to be mentioned. Also--neither is really a full-timer. One is an owner and one is a part-timer who works 5 days a week because he loves radio. Both very busy guys and Altoona is lucky to have both of them.

No one has to go outside of the market to hire. There are plenty of people currently off air who used to be on air and there are plenty of part-time people who would do a decent job and continue to improve if given the opportunity and freedom to do so.
 
Again I ask the question...Who? If I were in a position to be looking for someone to fill a slot.... who shall I be considering? Where do I go to hear them if they are on the air?

I'd go to your radio if you wanted to hear them on air. Half the people you hear on the radio are part-time.

I hate to get into names, because I'm bound to leave a few excellent people out. I apologize for that. There are so many part time people who used to be full time. Jay Randyll on Froggy and Rocky, Jim Price on Rocky, Artie Dee on Waly, Chad Bender on Rocky. The Haze used to be full time and now is part time at Froggy. You can hear his voice-overs all the time on WTAJ-TV. I think it's great when many of the part timers have been in radio for nearly 30 years. No matter what time of day you tune in, you'll have a quality voice on your radio.

There are other part time people who might be newer, but have a lot of potential if given the chance.

Add to that all of the people who used to be full time and are still in the area but not on the radio. I know a couple of those who would enjoy doing radio again, but radio is not willing to pay them enough for it to be worth their time.

I think you're asking the wrong question. It's not "where can I find talent?" It's more like "where can I find someone who will work for 20somethingK a year?"

I don't think you'll find many people willing to give up what they have now, switch to full-time radio, only to chance being out of the job in less than a year. As was proved again recently, there is no loyalty to long-time talented employees.

Going the part time route might just be the best way to keep good voices on the air. Those people do it because they want to--not for the money--they have another job to provide the food.

It sounds like you're trying to recruit via the board, which ain't a bad idea. If you've got a legitimate gig to fill you should be talking to Grant Armstrong (not his real name), ex-3WZ. He was still hanging around town at last report. The people at Z can probably put you together. A lot of people think Grant's one of the best air talents ever to grace the airwaves around here. Good guy, too.

NOW we're getting somewhere. Is anyone doing live stuff in the market? Or is it as I would assume...all tracked. Anyone can make a track sound good but to go live and be someone in todays market is a rarity. Just curious...
 
Forget about part time gigs, how much Voice Over work is available in the Johnstown-State College-Altoona area? Is there an independent production house in the area?

My wife would like to move back to the area and I have done VO over the years in addition to me fulltime work. I'm thinking of setting up a shop in your area.
 
Great! That's just what we need...another radio guy running a production studio out of his basement and/or garage! How many people have tried this in the past 30 years?
 
Furthermore...that's all we need, another carpetbagger moving in. We already have more people than jobs. Stay where you are and buy your wife an Atlas.

I agree Grant did a nice job. I also think Drew Shannon is decent on Joe FM. I think Troy and Jerry have the best morning show in town. As far as nights are concerned I really don't know who is local. I think Lia is a sat feed, and I think Tank is fed out of another market on B94. Both of those guys are decent. WOWY's Mike Harvey is good for syndication.
 
How about that headcase J. Paul? He was always good for a laugh when he did overnights way back when on Q94 and then WPRR. Tom Lewis was another one. He's probably available in between combing through his car's ashtray for roaches. There's a guy who works for the Altoona Water Dept. who was a good jock, but the pay is much better at his current job.

Furniture salesmen seem to make good jocks, or is it the other way around?
 
Mock3 hit this one on the head... the part-timers are doing this for experience and/or because they enjoy it and they have other part-time jobs on the side that pay the bucks. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE should ever be in the position to be making $20,000 a year or less, but it's the world we live in, and I know plenty of full-time jocks that are below the poverty line. Good luck finding some talented schmuck that wants to live in a cardboard box on the corner of Allen and College... at least Zeno's has an awning...
 
I don't think local zoning laws would permit that. Some nights I sleep in my fry wagon but only because I can tell the IRS that I'm spending $180 a night in a hotel and then I pocket the profits. Plus you would be surprise what kind of women I meet on the road. The wagon sleeps two. What's a schmuck anyway...is that like a putz? I think the Putz is still doing a morning radio show.
