Is there any "GOOD" part time talent in Altoona? WHO??

Is Grant still around and what was the reason that the Z got rid of him or was it his own choice...anybody know? Drew not only sounds good on the air but is one of the best production people in Centre County and the state for that matter...as a matter of fact I will go as far as saying he has award winning talent. Troy and Jerry? Come on! There is a fine line between offensive and funny, they cross that line every morning. There are people who have trained monkeys to do science projects, but they can not train them to listen to that show. Lia is a satellite feed, but Tank is not. As a matter of fact I think Tank used to work part time at Joe-FM, not 100% sure of that...I agree he is good, he was a little shakey when he first started but he has come around, very good CHR night show, that is local...don't know if he is still Voicetracking it or if he is live but if it is tracked it sounds very live. I also think Rick Houston at Joe-FM on the nights is a great DJ and even though he and I fight on this board sometimes I have to say that Steve Hilton is equally as good as the rest of the people on this list, I grew up listening to Steve on B103 and he is as sharp today as he was 20 years ago, Nick Bazoo on WOWY is fantastic and Mike Douglas/J.B. Ryan (same guy in case you didn't know) well lets say as one person he is better than the other...if you really want to talk about good talent though...lets move over to the AM everybody keeps sticking with FM...but what about Kevin Nelson...the man has been on the air since radio was formed that has to say something about his talent right? Also Jeff Buyers, Wes Richards, Dave Shannon all have great on air presence. There is also a lot of good talent in the area that is no longer on the air. Jim Moser, Tor Michaels, he may not be around anymore but Jason Jackson, Dave McCall, there are more but they escape me right now

Geez, thanks guys!

I'm so glad ya'll are open to new original "professional" Voice Over guys who may be moving to your area!

Now, I'm sure you know that I don't need to live in your area to work your area.

I'm out of Chicago and have done OK. Yep, that little studio in the basement (actually garage) has been a money maker. I use a T-1 for connectivity. Are there T-1's yet in your area ::)? I don't work alone, I have a business partner and intend to continue doing VO's for the Chicago market. The question is whether my SAG card will be a problem to you guys.

I know how to work a market and will be a good boy.

Just so you know, my wife is retiring as a Librarian with an emphasis in performance storytelling. She's from the Cresson area and would love to give back to her "home town". Your kids might benefit from her work. She is outstanding.

Sounds like there may be no friendly room for us. It's a terrible thing when all that is left is guns and religion.

WOW... no ego here huh? I know ego's are a part of the business but rarely do they permeate through type so obvious. As a "professional" you may want to tone down the self-righteousness a little here or you will find work a little "difficult" to acquire. Besides....why would anyone pay for a "professional" when us gun toters are willing and VERY able to do the job as well or....dare I say ...better. Why is that you may ask?.... Cuz in these here parts we know enough to pray and then duck before we say something that would get us shot. Its called the "local" connection and knowing your listeners. All SAG will get you around here is a label indicating that you aren't worth the paper it's printed on. Seems you DO know how to work a market don't you.....Best of luck!

Don't expect to make any money doing VOs in this market. Agencies are paying as little as $35 per cut, regardless of where it comes from. The broadcast TV stations and local production houses already have cheap and reliable sources. I just don't think there's much opportunity to make money from this market.

Thanks for the response. If we end up moving back to your area, I'd be doing VO's to make a few extra bucks and augment the other stuff I'm doing. Doing VO is tough everywhere. In towns like Chicago, there are a ton of out of work actors who get into this line.

I have a couple of other lines of work a part from radio/TV production. I actually do more industrial than commercials and I doubt there is any of that work in Johnstown/Altoona/State College. Maybe in Pittsburgh. I hope to continue doing some of that kind of work remotely. I should be able to simply because I already do.

We're not sure yet what our plans are. We have two grand kids here in Chicago and leaving them may be non-starters. My wife is conflicted right now but I will support her choice. Central PA is a beautiful part of the country but family is first for us.

By the way, I was messing around with my SAG comments (one has to have a card to do some work here) and the other items. This business is not easy as we all know. I have found in life that there is always room for one more at the dinner table, if you know what I mean. :)

I'd like to give this radio stuff a try if anyone is looking for help. I'd be available after the bowl games are over. The satellite installation business is popping right now with Christmas gift installs and folks wanting real digital for sports.

What's a VO? What's a SAG card?is that the Sheetz Automatic Gas Card?
All this insider stuff is really cool. Enlighten me please.

Don't let these industry terms throw you all night satelite man. Sag is just another way of saying that you're a little heavy in the ol' bread basket. In other words, you've been sitting at control boards so long with little or no physical work that your gut is SAGGing. Same thing happens when I eat too many of my fries and waffle cakes.

AJ, what's the latest and greatest with you? Are you on Froggy? Sorry, been out of the loop. Hope all is well.

all night Sat guy, I have no idea what any of that stuff is either and I've been doing radio for too long.

As to the dude in Chicago, Carl is right when he says there's no dough in voiceover $. Too make decent money in either market you gotta be in sales or upper management. If you can work in programming and your wife can work as well, you might be okay, but don't expect to get rich. Then again, maybe you can bribe O'Drama for that senate seat thats up for grabs and you won't hafta go anywhere

There is a lot of money to me made in voiceovers, guys. I've done my share and it can be lucrative....not steady...but good when you get it. I do about 3 a month. here's the worlds best kept secret and I'll share.

You're on your way and you can thank me after your first check.

SAG = Screen Actors Guild

To get voice over work, sometimes it's required that you're a member of SAG. There are others who will take non-union, as well.

As far as making money in voice over, the most I've received is $75 per spot. The least is $50. It varies from agency to agency. I can clear at least an extra $300 to $600 a month, depending on how many spots I get per week. I normally do one to two a week. Sometimes three, but it's not often.

It's nice work if you can get it! The problem is getting it.

What production houses are there in the State College area?

I'm not so sure that you are one to be talking about "crossing lines" and what is/what is not offensive.
