Is there any Spanish Radio Stations Broadcasting English Language Sports?

KWSX-1280 in Stockton, California recently switched their format from English Language NewsTalk to "La Preciosa" Spanish Oldies on June 7, however they still broadcasts "The Stockton Ports" minor league baseball games in English. I am wondering if there are any other "Spanish Language Radio Station" broadcasting "Any Sports, Major League or Minor League" in English? It sure sounds like a weird combination? ???

When that happens, it is because of contracts that companies have with teams! Kinda like in Houston when 980 went from a station playing a variety of talk shows and the Red Raider Football Network to Tejano. In its first months with the new format, every saturday, you would hear spanish music and then out of nowhere, the Red Raider Football Network came on. I'm guessing La Preciosa will stop running the games when the season is over and they will terminate the contract.

Or they will sell the station... I think Preciosa is a way to keep it on the air at no cost until a buyer is found.

David, I have heard that rumor long before the KWSX switch of June 7. Now the question is who would be interested in KWSX? I have heard that....Actually I'll post my guess on the Central California Board

Stockton is kind of a shadow market, 81st in population but 151st in billings. I would expect CCU to get out of the whole market... there are only $12 million in total market revenues

I am assuming that you expect CCU to get out of both the Stockton/Modesto market (KWSX-1280, KFIV-1360, KOSO-93.1, KMRQ-96.7, KQOD-100.1, KJSN-102.3), or just Stockton? (KWSX-1280 and KQOD-100.1)

WKBF 1270 Davenport runs Spanish Regional Mexican and English Swing of the Quad Cities

740 WQTM in Orlando has the UCF Knights. Clear Channel just renewed that contract with UCF/ISP Sports even though WQTM is Spanish-language programming.

It looks like 1200 WPTK in Fort Myers will nab the FSU Seminoles, although I think they may flip to English.

I've seen lots of Spanish language radio stations carrying English language sports. It's obviously a money issue. Either they need it, or somebody is willing to pay enough to get on the air. Many college football programs have strong local market alumni that want to hear the game, they don't care about programming. Many stations that have religious formats carry sports. That's about money as well. It's always about money.

My station airs local high school football in English because it is quite a money maker. I do loose most of my Hispanic audience during that time period.

In 1999 WPRX 1120 in Bristol, Connecticut carried New Britain Rockcats Baseball in English. (They are the AA Minor League Team of the Minnesota Twins). The team was left in the lurch after 1998 flagship station WNTY 990 in Southington, CT was abruptly sold and flipped to Spanish Tropical after their owner died. The owner of 1120 said it was a great opportunity to get Hispanics interested in the team. He said that baseball is very popular in Puerto Rico. The arrangement lasted only one year. The team has been on WDRC 1360 ever since. (They've been Standards, The Best of Everything, and now talk).

Baseball games in Puerto Rico in that era averaged an attendance of maybe 600. Young people were not interested in the games, and only older fans still went. I can see why the broadcasts lasted only a year.
