Is this true? Tell me it isn't true! It can't be! Why is nobody talkingabout it?

I hope 95.7 or 102.9 does not become Merlin News like 101.9 in NYC!

Not likely with KCBS on 106.9, not to mention the popularity of KQED-FM. I don't think there's room in the Bay Area for another all-news station.

WOW KBLX is the last true Urban AC station in California. Everything else close to their format is Rhythmic Oldies. At least Entercom will keep some of the staff hopefully. Cumulus would have just turned it into a jukebox but still too early to tell.

So I assume when the new owners take over KVVN AM and KVTO AM their Vietnamese and World Ethnic formats will remain the same.

Does Entercom program Urban AC in any of its large markets? I am unaware of any, although it wouldn't surprise me if they do the format in a couple of their smaller markets in the south.

A contemporary hard rock format akin to KSJO in the mid/late 90's would be nice. Smooth AC or Smooth Jazz would be nice, too.

Would Bay Area country listeners (especially those in the northern half of the market) be willing to listen to another attempt by Entercom? I certainly cannot see anyone in the southern half of the market leaving 95.3 at this point after being burned by S.F.-based stations so many times!!! I would be amused if they relocated KGMZ to 102.9 and brought Country back to 95.7.
Yes, Entercom do program large markets that have Urban AC format. Think about Hampton Roads 95.7 R&B. One thing is Entercom needs to fix the Sports station before they can change another format. 95.7 THE GAME is doing very bad in the ratings, much worse than 95.7 THE WOLF (Country).
In addition to WVKL, Entercom also owns two more UAC stations: WQMG in Greensboro/Winston Salem and WWWS in Buffalo.

KALW, KQED-FM, KFJC, KPFA, KCSM-FM, KCEA, KPOO, KUSF/KDFC, KOHL, KSMC, KAZU, KKUP, KUSP, KSJS, KZSU....and how many of these stations are full market signals compared to all the consolidated signals? That's what I thought, not many......I knew it wouldn't take you long to reply either David.....as usual....

I don't care if they're full market signal or not. The premise in the post was that there was nothing listenable on Bay Area radio, no interesting music, nothing worth hearing. But I've just pointed out some amazing stations. You can hear anything from obscure big band tunes on KCEA, to African music from Senegal on KALW. You can hear compelling radio audio collages on "Radiolab" and true stories "with a beat" on "Snap Judgment" (which is locally produced in Oakland).

The Bay Area has some COMPELLING radio, and if you're in the fringes of some of these stations, well, I believe every one I've mentioned now streams as well. That's how I hear KCEA and KZSU.

Not one of the SF FMs has a full market signal... only a few of the AMs do, either. The SF MSA was defined to make it a top 5 market and to attract billing... but how many FMs have a 65 dbu from Santa Rosa to Campbell?

None.

Maybe they will move KFOX from 102.1 to 102.9 and make 102.1 KGO. Although we may be missing yet another prime opportunity for a Q station at 102!!!!

"Wonder if a change away from an "urban" targeted station would incite reaction from the African American community"

wonder why you have to use 'incite' why not cause or prompt ?

Why do you have to be so defensive?

It might considering Oakland has a large and very active black community. In this region, not only do blacks listen to urban formatted radio stations, but a number of Latinos and some Asians as well. Otherwise, KMEL wouldn't be within the top 5 of the overall 12+ for the market.

However, urban AC is a different thing... some run as high as 95% Black cume, with nearly no Hispanic and little non-Hispanic white listening.

Does anybody remembers KSOL 107.7? It was an R&B station that did very well in the Bay Area before it went Wild. KSOL has most of its audiences are White, Blacks, Latin, and Asians.

I once worked there. I remember when it showed up in the Arbitrons as #4 and other stations cried foul. They thought for sure that the rating was an error because it was the first time that an "urban" station cracked the top 5 in the Bay Area.

I do remember in the 1990's KTSF-TV 26 did a segment for a Filipino show and I do remember the host said that "KMEL tends to have the largest Filipino Audience when Rick Chase is On"

Since "Asian" is not a stratification variable in Arbitron, there is no way to know whether that group contributed to KSOL listening.

Yeah, "some" but that doesn't imply to all, and this market is one of those exceptions to that trend. The Bay Area's 2 markets (San Francisco-Oakland & San Jose) aren't known for either huge black populations overall rather pockets.
