Is tomorrow the day? 🎅🏻🤶🏻

The December survey period begins tomorrow, which happens to be a Thursday. (All the surveys start on a Thursday.) B101 almost always flips to Christmas on a Thursday--either the week before Thanksgiving, or the week prior to that. The Holiday survey doesn't start until December 7 and I can't fathom them waiting until then. So, I have to assume it's either tomorrow or November 16.

Well, we weren't talking about anything else!

.

Tomorrow isn’t the day there’s no reason to go this early there’s nobody else to worry about flipping early I say the latest it flips is November 16th or the 20th

To quote Joan Rivers....can we talk? :);)This "flip" stuff is a bit over the top (not speaking to any one station, thread, etc., more general). This many years (heck, decades) in, particularly for AC stations, it's less a "flip" than a routine period of starting holiday songs. Were boards like this around say 30-40 years ago, would we have this much focus on the "flips" on Christmas Eve at whatever time someone started their marathons? Seems like we'd just say, ok, it's their 12/24/36 hour deal.

If B101 went from playing AC to AC/DC, ok, that's a real flip. This is par for the course that happens to be guided by business considerations an audience isn't aware of nor inclined to care about. :)

Just some random thoughts on a cloudy day.

When a station did/does 12 (or however many) hours of Christmas music, it's special programming. Like when Madonna was in town a number of years back, and B101 played all Madonna for hours. Neither of those would be considered a flip. Now, if a station completely abandons its format for weeks at a time? That's a flip. A temporary flip, but a flip nonetheless. The trades have referred to it as such, so I think we're safe using the term. They flip to Christmas, and five or six weeks later, they flip back. At any rate, it's beginning to look a lot like...B101's not doing it today. Usually by this point in the day of the flip, they've dropped a few hints on-air and/or on socials.

I miss Joan!!

While this is all semantics about the definition of "flip", the fact is that the stations that go "All Christmas" are not flipping... they are following the tastes of their listeners at a specific time of the year.

Were a station that has gone All Christmas for decades not to do so, while another station in the market did... taking 75% of the other station's audience with it... we'd rightly conclude that the tastes of that core audience quite simply morphed in the last months of the year and all the station that "goes all Christmas" is doing is following the preferences of its own listeners.

That’s a better phrasing, that I couldn’t think of. If the “A” part of AC wants Christmas, that is the format for 6 or 8 weeks, or however long it is. It’s just a routine part of the business.

They have a contest saying the flip will be some time between Nov 11 and Nov 19. I'm guessing it will be Nov 16 as they tend to flip on Thursdays. I doubt it would be tomorrow since that would be pretty early in the contest and they want people to listen.

This contest, such as it is, represents a complete departure from the status quo, so I'm thinking it won't matter much whether it's Thursday or Friday or whatever day. They're clearly using a whole new playbook. This move gets them off the hook for having to tease the flip on-air and via socials, and also means they don't have to produce any sort of on-air fanfare, as has been typical in the past. I suppose they'll have to do it at a time when they have someone in the studio who can be responsible for taking ten phone calls. 🤡

I’m gonna say November 16th at 3pm
I suppose the thinking is to keep the contest going as long as possible since the obvious intent is to increase listenership because people want to win the $500. Of course, they could increase listenership many magnitudes higher than that by just starting the damn Christmas music. This whole thing seems counter-intuitive.

B101 might be changing the music to Christmas at 1pm. Social media is hinting at it. Anyone recording the change of music?

I think it will be during the morning show but just a guess. My guess is Nov 16 at 9am or 10am
Today at 10am would basically just be giving away $500, since that's historically when they would have flipped regardless of a stupid contest.

B101 HD2 is still bet ql. Hasn’t switched to regular music.
Do they even still do that? Putting a typical AC library on the HD2 while Christmas is on the main channel? It's not like anyone but us even knows it's there.
