GM Dave Black recalls the long, hard battle on WSUM's fifth anniversary

Rich Albertoni on Thursday 02/22/2007

WSUM celebrates five years of broadcasting at 91.7 FM this week, but for Dave Black, the station has been a 14-year labor of love.

Being the general manager of UW-Madison’s campus radio station isn’t the career he was planning on. Still, Black was all smiles last week when he recounted the unlikely event in 1993 that changed the course of his life.

Four UW students increased the power of the unlicensed Lakeshore halls radio station, WLHA, thereby triggering a complaint from the Federal Communications Commission.

“WLHA had jacked up their signal to the point where it interfered with another station,” recalls Black.

“The FCC called them. Stephen Thompson [former Onion arts editor] was the music director at the time and took the call. The FCC asked them to shut down, so they did.” ...

Re: Isthmus - The fight for UW radio: GM Dave Black recalls the long, hard battl

...characteristically for Isthmus, the piece doesn't mention that UW-Madison tried to put up a WSUM/91.7 signal that stretched from Wautoma to Rockford, which, of course, would have required eliminating WSUW/91.7 Whitewater and caused interference with WMSE/91.7 Milwaukee. I was on WSUW at the time -- an aircheck of my show at the time can be heard at http://rockradioscrapbook.ca/mackenzie2.ram -- and, IIRC, Dr. Wilfrid Tremblay, WSUW's faculty chief, raised enough hell with the Board of Regents to kill that idea before WMSE even got wind of it...

...my morning show at WSUW had a strong pocket of listeners in Madison that were cut off when WSUM took to the air. As a prior WHLA jock in '83, I approached WSUM with the idea of my doing a version of the show on WSUM during the summer months WSUW wasn't operating. WSUM responded that I played one Beatles cut every week (it was an oldies/retro show) and they rejected the idea as a result -- then simply took the program concept and did it themselves, with entire sets of Beatles sides most mornings. Maybe Dave Black wanted to teach the UW-Madison crew how lies and thievery are time-honoured broadcasting traditions...

Ultimajock,

What years were you at/on WSUW/91.7 Whitewater?

A family member of mine had a show on WSUW for 5 years in the late 1990's / early 2000's. I'll send him a note and see if he knows you.

...I was on WSUW from the Autumn of 1998 to the Winter of 2004, when my father died and I moved to La Crosse. If your relative is Jack Strebel, tell him I listened to his THE SAUCEMAN COMETH clip CD just yesterday and his "Life in Uganda" promo is still funny...

I sent you a PM (let me know if you didn't get it) - and no I'm not related to Jack.
