it's happening to CC here now...salary caps on sales people

I've long heard rumors that CC was implementing de facto salary caps on reps, and now it has hit here. I heard that WEBN and WOFX were taking accounts away from Senior Reps, to distribute the wealth to the junior sellers, and make things more fair for them. Wow, that certainly motivates anyone who has any talent to want to go work there, doesn't it? I thought CC was known for being extremely capitalistic not communistic--so this has to be some sort of Thom Schurr/Marxist sleight of hand.

The exodus continues as Mike Jamison (WLW Sales manager) crosses the street to Cumulus, Erin Hanlon (Sr FOX/EBN Rep) leaves for parts unknown--over 70 people have quit the hallowed halls of CC since The FredHeads took over. The story earlier this year was they needed to have 100 sellers on the street by the end of the year--that was a mistake. They needed to have 100 sellers quit and hit the street by the end of the year...maybe that was the corporate mandate.

How not to run a business...a study in idiocy, conducted each day at 8044 Montgomery Road...

Not to defend CC, but the other corporate radio companies have been doing this for a while. Infinity regularly penalized senior sellers by giving their accounts to the pretty boys and girls they brought in to fill cubicles. Often they were accounts that the seller had nurtured and built up for years. On more than one occasion the client was so ticked off by the new kid's inept handling that they reduced the buy.

It defies logic.

When the end game (for radio and lots of other businesses) is "pump and dump" as the money people who dictate to CC, CBS et al are manipulating, these moves do not defy logic at all. They defy good business sense if you are actually trying to build a quality business, but they don't defy logic. We're on short time here in the US of A.

I agree, we are on a short time here in the US of A. Unless you are part of creating content, you are going to be a commodity.

quite possibly the wisest thing i've read on this entire website.
true in many other disciplines, too.
