It's Official...No More Saturday Radio Column In NY Daily News

Yup. It's official. No more Saturday radio column in the NY Daily News. The paper cut out space for that department. Saturdays column was a staple in the paper for over 25 years. Most times it was short, but it will be missed.

I'll miss that...I haven't dug the whole "Television and Radio" section since the redesign a couple weeks back. I'm not a Richard Huff fan, and since he's become the "editor" of that section it's not as compelling, IMO.

well, for ME, I will miss David Hinckley's Saturday columns on radio - he says MORE with one or two lines than some Daily News writers say with a WHOLE, ENTIRE PAGE!!

I'll miss that Saturday tidbit as well.

But ever since David Bianculli left the Daily News, David Hinckley has also taken on the task of reviewing television shows. So to that, I could understand giving Mr. Hinckley a bit of a break since he has a lot more going on now than just radio and opinionated thoughts about the social mores of today, regarding media.

As long as David Hinckley has a job, that's what matters! He's helped me out plenty and I owe him a huge debt!

Hinckley's radio column is my first read on-line every morning. I will miss the Saturday edition, but Monday through Friday it is always a must read for me.

And the guy responds to e-mail about his column. That's rare these days.

There is no Friday edition...that's where "Soap Talk" runs. So we lose the fifth edition of the week altogether.

But you've also kept it REAL within the dance music thing as well, Tony - and David knows that! That's one thing I admire about you, Tony - you've ALWAYS been there for the dance music community just like I would like to think I have been for the oldies community....

First Saturday WITHOUT David Hinckley's Radio column - what a scary thought that is!! :(

Andrea,

It took me a long time to think about how to write back on this because you've actually brought a tear to my eye! I was deeply touched when I've read this.

Admittedly running a coalition like this is tough because there were many times that I had questioned myself wondering if all of this would serve a real purpose and at times, feeling as if I was the only one out there fighting. It was after Pulse 87 launched, I felt that it was purely worth all of the blood, sweat and tears (and the sore legs from walking around both days of Beatstock! LOL) to keep fighting for something I (and the dance music community) truly believe in and never give up on it.

This is a "calling" for me. It was just something that I needed to do. The DJ's, dance music artists, clubs, etc have always given me pleasure with the music so to that, the coalition was my way of "paying them back". And I'll always keep "paying" because even though we now have Pulse, I will NEVER stop fighting for the dance music community in regards to getting the respect that we deserve in the USA! :) Dance music means a lot to me. I can never turn my back against it. I NEED them (the artists, DJ's, promoters, radio, etc.) and will do whatever I can to help the scene.

To that Andrea, I give you major respect as well. CBS turning into "Jack" was WAY MORE catastrophic than when Hot 97 flipped to hip-hop. I knew oldies fans were core to their music...I just didn't realize HOW core. It took you, as well as supporters such as Allan Sniffen and the many fans that listened to CBS-FM to make noise and eventually get something done.

I can only wish that there is a "you or me" that is a country music fan and do some sort of coalition to get the music back not just on terrestrial radio, but on a standard position...not relegated to HD.

Thank you Andrea!

TS

PS: Agreed.....not seeing a Saturday column anymore just doesn't feel right.

Well...aside from the sweet compliments, this is what it is, in a nutshell: For the "two years", I kept the hope alive in my heart, I kept the dream alive, even when everybody thought I was a fruitcake about it (actually, David made me a "star" - when our community did the rally 6/22/05, my name was in the NEXT DAY's Daily News!!). But really - even though I was SO ABNOXIOUS about certain things not being what they were when the station came back 7/12/07....I have come to a point where I can ACCEPT AND ENJOY today's CBSFM - and I can still be "Andrea from Brooklyn" and ENJOY IT!!

And what also helped....for the "two years", there was an INCREDIBLE ARRAY of "happenings" within OUR community that filled the void for me, musically and radio-wise (including a 6/3/07 phone call to Bobby Jay on B103 that is not to be forgotten....) - but like William DeVaughn said all those years ago, I am "VERY thankful for what I've got" - thankfully, one of the things I AM thankful for is CBSFM - best summarized, to me, by Ron Lundy the day WE came back, "it is my station, it is your station, it is OUR station" and those are words I live by!!

But really, I wish you SO the best in getting the victories for the dance music community, just like the successes we have had and continue to have in the oldies community...

I'm starting to see the "fruits" of the work of the coalition happen as well. I was interviewed last Friday (May 23rd) on the air by Star during the "Star and Buc Wild" show on Pulse 87 along with being on other radio shows as well. I want to continue to do whatever I can. However, there still is a lot of work that has to be done....a lot of it, internally within dance music since there is infighting going on for whatever reasons that I have no idea about. That sort of infighting will hurt more than help and something has to be done to stop it...or at the very least come to a middle ground for the sake of the music, despite personal feelings. It's something I come to terms with every day. But regardless...we wage our battles! :)

and i hope VERY SOON that the dance music community will experience the same kinds of successes that we in the oldies community have had since 7/12/07....

Gee, no Saturday morning Hinckley on radio?

What will Phil Boyce and Don Imus at WABC do? That's one day less of not entirely accurate propaganda for them!

I guess I'll be reading more accurate radio news now at "Crain's New York."

On the Washington Post's loss of "The Listener" - from another who answers his emails ...

Marc Fisher, The Washington Post

Marc,

You will be missed with "The Listener" column, but you've hit it right on the head about radio.

Just as "Radio's future is in it's past," you've left us with a marvelous tome in hardcover entitled "Something In The Air" -- a must read and, in itself, a true "collector's edition" of what made radio great and what made great radio.

Thanks for the memories and continued good wishes to someone who's seen radio a lot deeper than most ever will.
