It's that time again! The Perseids Meteor Shower - and I've gotten 1 new stn! 8/11/14

Yes, it's almost midway through August which means in a matter of 48 hours we will see the peak of the Perseids Meteor Shower. These showers are supposed to put on a show, anywhere up to 100 meteors an hour on peak night. And there's no better way to "watch" the show than do an overnight unattended recording. Station comes in for a few seconds and is GONE - just like that. The power of meteor scatter!

Last night I set my radio on 98.1, started recording around 0025 PT, and got a new one!
approx. 12:32AM - 98.1 KGTM Rexburg, ID; beautiful 10+ sec burst, perfect timing with mention of "Rexburg" and into "Summer" by Calvin Harris. NEW #378, 100KW at 470 miles. Posting an audio clip as well.
about 30 minutes later: unid short 1-sec burst with part of "So Emotional" by Whitney Houston, about an hour later heard two bursts with Prince's "Kiss." Maybe KISQ San Francisco.
It was rather quiet around 2-4AM with only brief 1/2 sec bursts, and around 4:30 I heard some station with "Don't You Worry Child" Swedish House Mafia, an approximately 4 sec burst. Maybe KGTM again.

Will update this tomorrow and Wednesday night because I am doing more unattended recordings overnight. Likely on 97.3 and maybe 95.5.

Last night I set my radio on 97.3 and heard hundreds of bursts between midnight and 7AM! 2 new ones and one new via Ms, but relog on Es.

1:06AM - 97.3 KLLC San Francisco, CA; song match to "Rude" by Magic! Also heard many other times, after 2AM with "Latch" Disclosure, a few minutes later with "Teenage Dream" Katy Perry, snippet of an ad for Discover the Dinosaurs around 4:20am, etc. NEW #379, 82KW, 611 miles.
3:25AM - 97.3 KSON San Diego, CA; song match to "Lettin' the Night Roll" Justin Moore. Es relog, 50KW, 976 miles. First "double play" for me! (Meaning getting a station via Es and Ms)
4:34AM - 97.3 KNCQ Redding, CA; song match to "Drunk on a Plane" Dierks Bentley. NEW #380, 28KW at 428 miles!
Also heard were tropo scatter from KIRO Tacoma (90mi), possible KLCE Blackfoot, ID with AC and CHR not matching KLLC, maybe Es relog KAML from Gillette, WY. Bursts every 30 sec-2 minutes!

Peak was last night. Recorded 96.5. Reason why 96.5, which I've already gotten a boatload already? Tried 106.1 - too much KFFM bleed. Tried 103.7, too much intermod messing it up, tried 102.3, too much KXDD and KYKV bleeding in, tried 95.5, too much intermod yet AGAIN! Ugh!

Still got a new one with KYXY San Diego, song match to "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" by Kelly Clarkston at 0117 PT matching playlist, heard twice more around 2AM. NEW #381, 26.5KW at 976 miles.
KOIT SF was also heard for a Ms relog with a HUGE 1 min burst with "Beautiful" Christina Aguillera.
Also got bursts of country music (at least one of four stations, KFLS, KLGT, KQSW or KRGI), Spanish music (prob relog KPSL), unid with what sounded like AAA music, and KWLZ tropo scatter.

What do you record with?
I've sometimes used a VHS recorder on 6 hour mode.

Yes CA was affected. Do you have a completely open frequency with little or no tropo scatter? That's what you should try for in the overnight hours.
I use a voice recorder. Wish I had a microphone input but I haven't gotten the cable yet, so it's raw from the radio's speaker.

Last night I was on 106.1 and got, yes, one more new Ms log!
2:10AM - 106.1 KKMV Rupert, ID; brief with "It's the Big Time with Whitney Allen" and into a Geico commercial. Only affiliate on 106.1 in the west - oddly it says only Saturday nights but there must have been a change at KKMV as this was not intermod slop and was sheer meteor scatter. NEW #382, 25KW, 437 miles. Nice short meteor log!
Also heard about three R&B/Rhythmic burns, maybe KMEL, and a rock burst or two. Plus a little bit of KBKS/KZFN tropo scatter. Meteors really slowing down now it seems here.
