ivi.tv now cary locals from NY, LA, Chi and Sea!!

Perhaps you have an older computer. Mine is only a few years old. It's 64 bit with 4 processors.
IVI works fine on it. So FilmOn only has LA stations, that a bummer as I'm mostly watching ME
in Chicago. They have been around longer than IVI, haven't they? Why have they not had their
plug pulled? How much a month is FilmOn?

I'm using a computer that I bought last month. IVI works fine on this one and the Laptop I bought last year. Nothing has crashed here. But it still doesn't improve the frame rate. That is something they need to do on their end to make ivi tv look as good as FilmOn does. FilmOn hasn't had their plug pulled because they are fighting the same battle that ivi.tv is and they aren't going to go down without a fight. The company is owned by Alki David. He is the 45th Weathiest person in the UK. The guy literally has Billions of dollars. So he's not all that worried about the networks taking his riches away. A court was able to temporarily stop him from retransmitting the big four Networks though. Right now FilmOn is absolutely Free. They were charging for it, but they stopped for the moment. Download their player now and try them out before they start charging again.

Oh trust me, I'm not forgetting about the Porn. All the movies are in full HD too. Porn has never looked so damn good! ;D
But for mainstream content ivi.tv has them beat.

Umm.....I'd hardly call a laptop with a 1.8 Ghz CPU & 3 Ghz of RAM that's only a year old an "Older" computer my friend LOL!

They had their wings clipped because they don't have the clever legal eagles that IVI does

Having said all that, IVI would score more brownie points if they just stuck with the HD sub nets & international broadcasters until the law can be updated (Yes, it'll take YEARS but still). Just my opinion there.

Say for example I am the owner of Norfolk's WAVY-TV 10 an NBC affilate. For the sake of this conversation I had found out that Denver's KUSA decides to feed their entire broadcast lineup both local and NBC online. Why should I at WAVY be concerned? That MY viewers will somehow stop watching my station in favor of Denver? My viewers would start watching "9 News Denver" instead of my "WAVY News 10 Norfolk" even though one would find very little Norfolk information on KUSA? For example does KUSA do Norfolk traffic reports? Does KUSA do tide reports for Virginia Beach?

Sorry..just dont see the big deal here as most people still would turn to their local channel no matter what. Of course not counting anyone who has a profile on this site. Just the average John & Jane Doe.

Well it shouldn't be that big of a deal, but the Networks and affiliates freak out at the thought of possibly losing even one viewer to another option. Viewers equal money to them. Stations get angry when people invade on their territory.

I think you hit on an important point. Most viewers want their locals, many on here are interested in watching other markets. But many on here hardly represent the mass audience.

How about this: because the syndicators (and networks) selling you their programming are selling you the exclusive rights to that programming within your market, and because they're setting a price for that programming based on the value of those exclusive rights?

It's true that very, very few people in your market will watch "Jeopardy!" at 7:30 from New York via ivi.tv if they can get it at 7:30 locally. But if your viewers can also watch "Jeopardy!" at 9:30 from Denver or 10:30 from LA or 12:30 from Honolulu, and if services like ivi.tv take off, you've got a triple whammy: first, fewer viewers watching your local airing if they're catching it at other times from other cities, and hence lower ratings on which to sell local advertisers; second, fewer potential viewers for whatever you're running locally at 9:30 or 10:30 or 12:30 if some of those viewers are watching something else via ivi; and third, a bill from your syndicator that's still premised on the idea that you have exclusive rights to their programming.

Now do you see why this would make local TV stations - not to mention syndicators and networks - nervous?

While I understand your point but I would imagine that for those who would want to watch shows like Jeopardy, Dr. OZ, Judge Judy and so forth..if they would rather for one reason or another would watch the show at a different time that what it is scheduled chances are much better they would go down the TVIO, DVR route before they would even consider watching the same show on a station hundreds of miles away...and with such things one can skip the ads.

And with netwrok shows like The Simpsons for example...FOX already allows it on Hulu.

Exactly. Why do you think WGN America exists rather than Superstaton WGN 9? Why do you think the audience for Superstation WWOR shrank? Why do you think KTLA isn't on all the systems that run TBS (TBS not WTBS 17)?

WWOR used to run Arsenio Hall 11pm ET which was 8pm PT. KCOP who ran the show complained about viewers watching the show three hours earlier in lieu of watching on KCOP. Once LA 13 was in good company local affiliate protection cranked into high gear. It's why DirecTV viewers can't get the east (NYC) or west (LA) channels without a waiver.

If ivi.tv were doing this for free there may be the aforementioned issues. The fact they're charging guarantees they'll feel enough heat to shut down. IMHO they won't see 2011.

But not without a little help -- when Syndex began New Year's Day, WWOR's original signal was replaced with the "EMI Service", in which affected series, including Arsenio, was replaced with old reruns and some "original" programming from the Christian Science Monitor and other sources.

Though of course, shortly afterward, WWOR and KCOP would become sister stations after Chris Craft acquired WWOR.

On the other hand we are talking about a business that IS very paranoid? How paranoid? A few months ago on Facebook I had mentioned that Libby Weaver, Ron Zapollo and Tom Martino were "awful" ( all three are part of Denver's KDVR FOX 31 ). After I had made that statement on Facebook, all of my friends who work in Denver media including those who had nothing to do with KDVR had decided to delete me from their friends list on Facebook because they were..well scared, feared that they would lose their jobs because of what I had said about KDVR on Facebook...and for the record they all had admited to me of their actions too such as my "friend" from KMGH.."I have a family to feed".

TV and radio can be such a paranoid business. Hardly a surprise that they are "concened" about itv.tv.
