J Fred Duckett, Longtime PA Voice of The Astros-Dead at 74

The World of Houston's Sports Scene has missed a true great sports voice. Duckett is known for introducing Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz!!!!-Over the Astrodome's PA Speakers. I've enjoyed going out to the old ballpark, and sit out on the old cheap seats watching stars like Andujar, Cadeno, Cabell, Bags, Ryan, Puhl, and today's stars like Craig Biggio, as they were introduced by JFD. We're gonna miss a true character to baseball. RIP (1933-2007)

I always wondered what happened to Duckett. After they replaced him, Astros games were never the same. Also, its a shame Jim Carolla isn't the PA voice for the Texans anymore.

I was at Cruz's last game as an Astro in 1987. During his last at bat the Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz! ran all the way across the right field scoreboard. They blacked out the whole board and I swear Duckett held the Cruz (in his voice) as those letters ran across the scoreboard. The fans were of course cheering wildly and I don't remember too many other places that got that loud.

For those that may not know or remember, the Astrodome had a scoreboard that went across the whole outfield panorama (over a football field long) with two large 'dot matrix' text displays (one in left field, the other in right).

Cruz played one more year in the bigs as a Yankee in 1988, and then retired. He's been with the Astros since the late 1990s as a coach.

I ,as may more, will mourn the passing of J Fred Duckett.

Got to hear and see him in action many years at Roy's Round House (Astrodome).

Condolenses to his family.

It is a shame about Jim at Reliant, but I think Bob Ford does a fine job at Minute Maid.

With that said....still we'll all miss you J Fred!

When Duckett announced Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz over the PA Speakers, it is also compared to Bob Ford when he announced Moises Alouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu over the same PA, which is also carried over to Minute Maid Park. And you're right about Jim Carolla, He was the long time PA Voice of BOTH the Oilers AND the Texans. Too bad the Texans released Carolla after he failed the auditions, giving it to some guy I never heard over at Reliant. Carolla, BTW worked for KILT-AM/FM for so many years as their news man. Duckett also worked for Rice University, and after he left The Astros, He worked as a teacher.

Jim was at KILT for 40 years. He was let go, along with KTRH's Pat Hernandez, the day after the Christmas party in 2004. I wish he was here with me on KNTH.
