Jason Wolfe To The Rescue Of WRKO - Boston Globe "Talk Of The Town"

D

Guest
If anyone can turn WRKO around it seems it is Jason Wolfe who put WEEI Sport Radio on the map and on the top of the charts.
Quite a good feature article on Wolfe in today's Boston Globe by Irene Sege "Talk of The Town" on Jason Wolfe.
It is said, that recognition of a problem is the first step to solving it. As a local person, Lexington native and now Canton, Wolfe seems to have a sense of what drives the Boston radio market. WRKO was once THE talk radio station in this city but various managers and owners let all of that slip away over the past 20 years. It its primacy WRKO had a continuity throughout the day as it built its audience. First Jerry Williams to David Brudnoy and then Gene Burns to Jerry Williams. It was a frontline talk station which others followed.
I am sure it can be done again and it seems Jason Wolfe has the fire in the belly to make WRKO a frontline talk station again.

Re: link to article

If one were interested in turning WRKO into Spanish language leased time broadcasting as soon as possible this might be the lineup that would get you there.

New WRKO lineup for Jason Wolfe to consider *DELETED*

Their current lineup is fine as is.

Jason Wolfe may have a major problem keeping WRKO-680 successful: Clear Channel may decide to flip WKOX-1200 after it's power increase from Air America to more "mainstream" talk radio.

If that happens, CC would likely yank talk shows syndicated by subsidiary Premiere Networks now on WRKO (including Rush Limbaugh) and move them to WKOX.

If that happens, WRKO would lose a very popular early-afternoon show (Rush) and the entire station could suffer as a result.

That could be his biggest challenge, even more so than the station's local programming.

That may be a blessing in disguise. Rush has run out steam and is fading fast. After all, how long can you blame a former prez who has been out of office for nearly a decade for all of today's situations. Is anyone listening to him?
The whole syndicated national talk show circuit may have also run its course.
Boston is a very politically and socially aware community that can and has sustained an all local talk line-up. If I were Jason Wolfe I would look to strengthening the local bullpen first. There are some weak links which are pulling the station down. Still, think that Scott Allen Miller is their stongest and most talented player in the current roster. DePetro is, well DePetro. He attracts a certain element but I don't think he is a team player. He is out for DePetro and the rest of the station be damned. Don't think you can rely on him to work to promote the whole station. Howie Carr? Have a funny feeling he is looking to move on. With his book hitting the best sellers list and a probable movie in the future he may have other projects that will not include WRKO. Would not be surprised to see him end up on Fox TV in some incarnation or even MSNBC.

If Jason Wolfe is as intuitive as I have read I am probably not telling him anything he does not know.

Parklane, do you have any evidence that Rush is "fading fast" to support your highly biased opinion?

I formerly subscribed to the Globe so my log-in info still works. Oh,
I do read the paper every day, but there were problems with delivery
so I just buy it at the newsstand.

Certainly a whiz with progamming and marketing

C'mon Howie still has some good years left in him. If you're going to
pair SAM with anyone, put him with DePetro and give us someone like
Glenn Beck (or even Stephanie Miller) from 9-noon. Or someone local.

> 2)Jay Diamond 9 AM - Noon

He'd be better at Air America 1200/1430...which still has NO local
show. "All politics is local", as Tip said. A good talk station has
local AND syndie shows, much like a good baseball team has veterans
and _promising_ rookies. Why no local shows at AAR? Scout around
in college radio and find someone who might eventually move up to
the national stage. After all, Mr. Stern was at WTBU (?) originally
and look at him now, $100 mil. a year. And he started in college radio!

> 5)7-10 PM Randi Rhodes
You want extreme radio, have her and Savage co-host a national show.
Let the fur fly. (Rumor has it many people are upset Savage was moved
to 10 pm and perhaps Wolfie will move him back to 7 once the Celts
season is done)

How about:

morning show--go back and forth between local radio-only segments and simulcasts of the Fox25 morning news? VB: "Yes! YES! YES!"

Savage to 7 pm, Phil Hendrie at 10

They could keep AAR at 1430 and 1200 would have Rush/Noory/Drudge/Beck/Dr Laura (all
syndicated by Premiere according to their site). Premiere's After Midnight
with Blair Garner is on WKLB; Jim Rome is on ESPN 890/1400, and FoxSportsRadio
(despite the name, it's syndie via Premiere) is overnights on WEEI.

One scenario for such a station (WKOX)?
5:30-9--local show
9-noon--Glenn Beck
Noon-3--Rush
3-6 pm local show or maybe Bob & Tom?
6-7 (?)
7-10 Phil Hendrie
10-1 Dr. Laura (I know, I know, but if you're going with an all-Premiere
model...)
1-5 am Noory/Bell Coast to Coast

Wow, what a remarkably hypocritical comment from radio-info.com's most banned poster - and as a bonus you have completely ignored my entirely valid question, not that that's any surprise.

Re: New WRKO lineup for Jason Wolfe to consider

You want them to get that one share with liberal radio? Harvey who?????

Why is it suddenly taboo to ask a poster to substantiate his opinion? This is, after all, The Arena of Ideas.

From my cursory research, it seems Rush is doing just fine, ratings-wise.

Those who pronounced his show "on borrowed time" the day Clinton left office have been shown to be either incorrect, or wishful thinkers!

And, with Campaign 2008 approaching, I'll make a prediction that Rush's ratings will show some impressive gains as the political scene heats up.
