Jay Allen reviews the new (hot) Sangean DT-160 mini portable...

I am SO tempted to get that!

The Amazon price is reasonable too.

I've had my Sangean PR-D5 for 7 years now (Wow, how time flies!) and it's the most solid radio I've ever had.

All the excessive tuning I've done and the knob hasn't even begun to show any signs of wear and tear.

So I can say first hand that Sangean makes an excellent product.

You are most welcome.Amazon had six when I clicked on
the link in the review...after thinking about it they had four,
checking my order later it was two...now they show it as
in stock,probably meaning by their other sellers.
The 100 hour battery life on two AA's got my attention,
earlier ones sucked batteries dry by comparison.
Also note this is "it",Sony no longer makes Walkmen.
 
I had the T 120, the precurser to the 160. I would get constant overload of FM signals and a lot of multipath. Looks like Sangean has fixed this with the new model, thanks to DSP. It's available on Amazon through a third party for $40 with no tax or shipping. The direct presets are a definite plus. I have the DT 200X. It has a nice speaker and is small,but does not have direct presets. It has 19 presets that you have to program as favorites and you can toggle back and forth between stations.
 
I have way too many radios. I have the Skywave, maybe the best small radio i ever had and the DT 200X,but at $40 with no tax or shipping I had to order it. The 100 hour battery life, the direct presets and the excellent reception Jay mentioned got me hooked;

Sangean will be releasing an HD radio in September that looks like the upgrade from their PR D15. No reviews yet,and I hope the great AM and FM reception isn't compromised. At $159, the list price, it's way more than I would spend on it. I'm waiting for reviews and the price to drop to $100 or less.

If it's significantly better, I'll be completely sold.

Because of the size, my Walkman isn't nearly as sensitive as my Sangean PR-D5 but it sounds like the DT-160 mini portable has some amplification that the Walkman may or may not have.

Sadly the DT-160 is not as sensitive as the SRF-37W or SRF-59 on AM.
It will do your locals fine but not stations out in the boonies.

Night time reception is OK but it's not a DX machine.

At first I thought it was due to a smaller ferrite bar but after
seeing the clear version on a popular swling website,the
ferrite bar in the 160 is about as long as the one in the SRF-59;
IIRC the one in the SRF-37 is a wee bit longer.

So the answer must lie elsewhere.

OTOH its FM performance leaves both Sony's in the dust,
particularly the 160's ability to slice and dice FM signals,
something neither Sony can do.

And the 100 hour battery life on two AA's is far beyond the
PLL SRF-37 and analog SRF-59,too.

I was ready to place my order on Amazon too.

The DT-160 seemed like what I was looking for, a convenient more portable little radio to do nighttime AM DXing from the mainland.

If we had E-Skip here, I would have gotten the DT-160 just for the FM reception.
 
I can vouch for the ICF-38's performance. It sometimes matches my Superadio II. Plus (obviously) it has the X-band.

Add a loop and it's a very good radio for DXing. A set of AA's lasts forever.

And yes, with headphones you'll need a mono adaptor -- the headphone jack is (inexplicably) mono.
 
Received the 160 yesterday. As stated FM is superb. AM is good,not great. The direct presets on the top of the unit are very handy and I like the tuning with the thumbwheel. It is similar to the CCrane Pocket Radio. Problem with the Crane was that there was no deep bass switch. The 100 hour battery life and the all around feel of the unit are well worth the $40 price tag. As of now there is no shipping and handling.

I've owned many pocket portables over the years. The 160 is the best.
 
You're saying Sony is no longer making the ICF-38? That's too bad.

Just took a look at the Universal Radio site: it looks like the SRF-59 is discontinued also.

I think they still make the EX5MK2. It's too bad I need another radio like I need another hole in my head... That particular Sony radio has always intrigued me.
