Jean Knight, the soul singer best known for 'Mr. Big Stuff' and 'Do Me,' has died at 80. She was 'a New Orleans girl through and through,' a good friend said.
"Mr. Big Stuff" has a notable drum break, wonder if an edit follows to another take? The usual conversation about mono vs stereo versions apply to this song. I seem to recall hearing some off center pressings of the single. Was Jean Knight related to Frederick Knight? I think "Mr. Big Stuff" could have been an inspiration for the groove of some of the Hialeah FL. R&B artists.
This is one of those records that simply did not need a jock doing an intro, although many certainly could not resist.
The cultural impact of the song was made evident when it was sampled (along with some vintage radio jingles) by the band Everclear and a song entitled "AM Radio."
