Jeff Gonzer joins KSWD; All premise that they're 'AAA' should finally be buried

OC Radio Geek said:
Hey guys, this is my first post! I have been listening to KSWD for a while now and I must say that the playlist is hit and miss. Sometimes it is quite good and sometimes it is terrible. I really think that the PD and MD are desperately trying to refine the playlist, but it's just not quite right yet. I think that KSWD should be a cross between KROQ/KYSR and the former 103.1 Indie station, which I loved very much. I believe this would be the perfect format for them!

Hey neighbor, I'm in Mission Viejo... What part of OC are you?

As far as "desperately trying to refine the playlist", how long is "quite a while" as a listener?? That would answer a lot IMO.

Yes you are right about "the perfect format" but seriously, you can't believe that they will ever go there, do you? Look at their playlist again!! Cheers!! :)

Yes, we are indeed neighbors! I live in Rancho Santa Margarita.

I have been listening for about six months. I think I started listening Thanksgiving weekend.

No, I don't believe that they will go that direction, but it sure would be nice!! I look at their playlist all the time online here at work. I listen to KSWD and 1031 Indie everyday. I really love Indie and I hope they can get back on the air soon. <crossesfingers>

Hey before I moved to Mission Viejo in early 2002, I lived IN Rancho for 9 years in a Wild Horse Loop townhome which is across the street from the lake, just off of Santa Margarita Parkway.

Yes six months ago they sucked as well, though not as bad as they suck today!!!
I have long given up on The Sound, now its just more fun to take shots at them because, well, because I can!! :D Like you I check their playlist, especially if I need a good laugh! I post regularly in their forum, there are others who also do that and are ex-listeners.

Compare the playlist (which I had archived) from April 25, 2008.... Its unrecognizable when compared with today's playlists at The Sound. See what you think......

No kidding!! They started going downhill around September as more and more old worn out tracks and artists started replacing newer artists and songs, and most female artists. They had a few "Meet-Ups" in the LA area... I went to three of them (late June, early August, and late August) where they provided a forum for the listeners who attended at various places including Gibson Guitar in Beverly Hills. It was nice, catered food, got to meet all the team at The Sound, I sat at a lunch table talking with Andy Chanley and his bride. Met up with Mimi Chen, she's from my home state of NJ. And there was live entertainment at each of the three meetups from: Amos Lee, Back Door Slam, and Donovan Frankenreiter all artists that since have been thrown under the bus regarding any airplay of their songs.

While Jeff Gonzer worked for KMET and KLOS (AOR stations) as well as FM 101.9 KSCA (a true AAA station), I think the PD Dave Beasing's comments and Jeff's comments about The Sound's format are telling.

So those of you who insist that The Sound is currently a AAA station and will blame that format for KSWD's eventual demise in Southern California, please make sure you understand that The Sound is an AOR station, not AAA. Having said that, I agree that ANY commercial station in the AAA format in this market will not do well. D.O.A. as Glenn loves to say.

I love KSWD, The Sound, LA's best Classic Rock!!
AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I don't know that it's a mistake. The Sound's 1.4 share in April (6+) is double what it was in January. Although I too would prefer they play more new AAA music, I want them to succeed, even if it means playing more classic rock. Otherwise, they will go away and LA won't have ANY place on the radio for new AAA music.

I used to feel that way, really I did. Now I couldn't care less... After all LA hasn't had a decent AAA station since KSCA. I get my fix on the 'net with over the air stations streams and Internet only streams. You cannot limit yourself, not in 2009..There's no reason. And Internet radio in your car is basically here and will only become more accessable soon.

That's what I have been doing lately. Listening to different streams from stations across the country. Tonight, for the first time, I listened to the Sound. I have to say that I loved it! I'm a classic rock fan (although I listen to everything from hip hop to adult standards) so I didn't mind at all that they lean classic. I like that they play deeper classic rock cuts that aren't played out. I love the show they air at Midnight "The Deep End with Nick Michaels". It is very well produced. I also liked the newer music they play, one song in particular that I really liked was Carolina Liar "Show Me What I'm Looking For".

I have seen endless posts on here critcizing the SOUND for being too classic rock. I disagree. First of all most AAAs in 2009 play a lot more classic rock than they did say 10 years ago. Next, no matter what approach to AAA the SOUND took they would have a challenge in a market like LA. It's wishful thinking that they would be doing a lot better if they had a current driven approach. Finally, I don't think there is room for a more current AAA because the music that KYSR plays these days fills that void,

Yes, I loved The Sound the first time I listened too! I have been listening for about 6 months now and I don't love it so much anymore. Their playlist has begun to wear on me. There are times, however, when their playlist is excellent and times when its weak. Like I mentioned in a previous post, their playlist is hit and miss.

A big problem is the repetition of the classic rock gold cuts. For a station that claims to go deeper, the on-air library in any given week often has several repeats of gold tracks. I swear a few weeks ago I heard them play "No Way Out" by the Allman Brothers three times in less than a week - and I am only an occasional listener. With so much appropriate AOR gold to choose from, having that level of repetition is absurd. So of course if you only listen on one given night the problem would not be noticeable, but fatigue sets in the longer one listens.

Exactly! Right on brother!!

repetition rules no matter what format

"So of course if you only listen on one given night the problem would not be noticeable, but fatigue sets in the longer one listens."

To piggyback on this comment, its all the more astounding since we can assume that while the share #s went up, the cume #s went down each of the last two ratings period, meaning that the TSL is higher. How can anyone give it that much time and be happy with the repetition? Or maybe those listeners like it like that?

Anyone want to take bets how long it takes Bonneville to turn The Sound into 80's hits "Rewind 100.3"? I'll guess by fall.

Cool! That would be a hellavalot better than what they're doing now!

Re: Jeff Gonzer joins KSWD; All premise that they're 'AAA' should finally be bur

Although I don't want them to change, if I were forced to bet on which format they might change to, I would go with mainstream AC (English).

Won't work in this market. We already have enough AC. 80's music has already proved to be a format that could would based on the ratings at Movin 93.9 in the end. Certainly it would be much better than being 27th in-demo as The Sound is.

I agree. AC is not the way to go. 80's would be totally awesome! lol

The problem with the 80's format is that it has been charred to a crispy crisp already, and when you consider half of the Jack library is 80's, the format is already somewhat taken. I mean, how many times can one listen to Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel before you pull your hair out? At that point, I'll be longing for the Sound's classic album cuts. At least with the Allman brothers, its only them that's wearing the songs out, not everybody else.

You need to look at Bonneville's Chicago - which is also on 100.3 - and now Cincinnati stations which are near clones of each other. I expect this will be the next format for Los Angeles. If they want to win in Los Angeles with that format, it will need to embrace a bit more 80's new wave hits and 80's rhythmic hits, though.
