Jeff Gonzer joins KSWD; All premise that they're 'AAA' should finally be buried

The Sound announced a reduction of currents on Friday. One, maybe two an hour.

Seems like replicating The Drive in Chicago is the new game plan. Not a bad plan, given The Drive's success. But I would expect all currents to be gone before long.

"Announced"? In what way, Zeb? Was it a press release or an on air announcement? Anyway, for the last five months or so, they only played one or two an hour ANYWAY...Actually one an hour! And that includes "currents" like Ray LaMontagne's "You Are the Best Thing" which as you know has been around since the summer of '08. So they might as well jettison the "currents/recurrents/new" stuff they do play.

Having said that though, at least this is a step in a more honest direction of what the station really is. Which is not AAA and has not been for a while .... Oh yeah I already said that way back in the thread title ;D

I have never heard anyone question if KFOG/SF is a real AAA or not. While they might play one or two more currents an hour than KSWD, the classic rock they play is more familiar and overexposed. Yet that formula works well for them as they do very well 25-54.

Re: Jeff Gonzer joins KSWD; All premise that they're 'AAA' should finally be bur

The latest PPM is showing that more classic rock is working for The Sound.

We we see them dropping currents all together and shifting towards classic rock and away from AAA.

Re: Jeff Gonzer joins KSWD; All premise that they're 'AAA' should finally be bur

Well, in that case, I hope The Sound maintains its mellow, adult feel, kind of like The Bridge channel on Sirius XM. Maybe due to PPM, the future of AAA will be less "alternative" but more familiar, adult friendly classics, with a few currents mixed in for flavor. Adult Rock. Not good for fans of true adult alternative music but perhaps a realistic compromise for a PPM world.

According to BDS, KFOG is 21% curent, 7% recurrent. The Sound is 9% current, 1% recurrent. That's a pretty big difference.

The word "Alternative" was only applied to the format so that it would have a catchy name in the trades; AAA. I know the guy who named the format; this is a true fact. Adult Rock has always been a better description.

But IMHO, even for so-called Alternative stations the word "alternative" is merely positioning. It's mainstream music, and has been for at the very least a decade and a half.

Being #27 25-54 is not working.

Whether KSWD cuts back on currents or not, their playlist is still highly flawed. SuperRadioFan and I have discussed this on a few occasions, especially on The Sound's own message board. By the way, I think they hate us over there. LOL The Sound just needs to actually play music that reflects what they describe their station to be on the air.......songs that you don't expect to hear and deep album tracks. When I first began listening to KSWD, that is what they were playing and they have gradually taken a tangent from that format.

I guess you're not in the ratings game then. They are trying to be more hit driven and familiar and that is why they've seen a slight increase in numbers.

How can Super be banned from his own board?

ROFLMAOFFFFFFFF!!

No looks like its gone for good. I'm on vacation now anyway and it doesn't matter either. I get my AAA fix elsewhere. When I have more time after my vacation we'll (ChannelFlippr and Geek) talk more!!

Oh yes....for sure man.

As a former AAA programmer, I can categorically state that The Sound is not playing that format, any more than KFWB is any longer an "all-news" station. I applaud Bonneville for taking the initial leap, but I must boo them for not sticking with it. OTOH, if I'd paid as much as they did for that stick, I'd want a better return too.

Report Card Time:

I believe with the latest change this month (going over 90% AOR gold) they have now converted to a classic rock station and nearly all pretense of the AAA format has been discarded. Therefore in my mind, May 2009 can possibly be the date to use to say they effectively changed format.

My prediction (and I believe Glenn's as well) when the format debuted was 18 months. I believe the Sound debuted in April 2008 (Super knows the exact date), thus 13 months may turn out to be the ultimate correct answer. It's somewhat messy though because they significantly changed the content of the playlist, but not the jocks and imaging. So they are still right on target to meet the full prediction. That is, they try watered-down classic rock (No AC/DC and Aerosmith here) for 6 more months and then bring back an 80's/90's classic upbeat hits format, and then that's the complete format change.

I am really pissed about where the Sound has ended up. I used to love their playlist very much and now it's completely ruined! I also loved Indie 103.1 and now they are off the air. But I can listen at work and at home! ;D

They are moving towards the music they play on THE DRIVE/Chicago which is a very successful station. I think KSWD has a better chance with this format than they would have had with straight AAA. I will be cheering them on, any station that segues from Nilsson "Coconut" into the Clash "I Fought the Law" is cool in my book! This will be a slow build, not an overnight success.

Re: Jeff Gonzer joins KSWD; All premise that they're 'AAA' should finally be bur

On May 29, R&R dropped The Sound from its AAA panel due to a reduction of currents. I guess that makes it official now. Oh well, they are still my favorite rock station in LA.
