'Jeopardy,' 'Wheel of Fortune' cancel audiences due to COVID-19 Fears

Wheel had its first sans-audience tapings last Thursday and Friday. It is being reported that Pat Sajak is not shaking contestants' hands, nor taking the hands of female contestants when guiding them to their spot for the Bonus Round, and contestants are being told not to make any physical contact with him at all, such as hugging. Trips are still being offered as prizes (For at least the past 15 years or so, Wheel only offers trips, cars, and shopping sprees for its non-cash prizes).

Broadcasting from home has been common for some time for at least Youtube and Twitch pundit shows.

Musicians not connected to any music label has been performing songs from home. I don't know how Traditional TV outside of national and network news will handle the issues of a shutdown due to State of Emergency orders due to COVID-19. I know radio and podcast operations have done the work from home recently though.

If I am not mistaken a lot of the Voiceover artists on OTA and Cable TV work from home, Here is some of the people that did work from home Scott Chapin, Beau Weaver, Jim Cutler and Bill Ratner. But that was years before the State of Emergency orders over COVID-19 was even considered. These People worked from home because they were doing multiple News Promos for multiple stations around the nation.

Marvel Studios is pressing pause on its Disney Plus shows currently in production, which includes “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki” and “WandaVision.”

For shows that are in pre-production, work will continue remotely.

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” was one of the first to delay production earlier in the week due to the shoot being in Eastern Europe. Following the sweeping production halts, Disney Plus is now doing the same for its remaining Marvel shows in production.

The news comes after Disney suspended production on all of its live-action films, including the Marvel film “Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings.”

Other Disney films with halted production and pre-production include “The Last Duel,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Home Alone,” “Nightmare Alley,” “Peter Pan & Wendy” and “Shrunk.”

Marvel’s Disney Plus series feature returning cast members from the films, like Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

Disney's Marvel Division is suspending operations due to COVID-19 scare.

This is technically off-topic but it is related to not having an audience.

When my church doesn't have a service (they didn't yesterday but there's no way we would have 100 people there) I watch First Presbyterian in Charlotte NC. I recorded and watched after I got through on the computer. Why they don't do this when there is snow I don't know but they had three pastors, an organist and a choir of two.

Tom Hanks was mentioned in the sermon. He had to make friends with a volleyball in one of is movies, and someone at the hospital where he is now gave him a ball marked "Wilson". That made him happy.

Both Wheel and Jeopardy! have announced that production is suspended until further notice.

If no more episodes this season are taped, Wheel's season finale will be around May 1.

Y&R and B&B tape in advance by 3 months IIRC. Unless the COVID 19 outbreak continues through summer, I don't think there will be an extended phase of reruns, but you never know.

Update Netflix has postponed one of their comedy festivals

Fremantle has announced that they have suspended American Idol

American Idol is the latest TV show to shut down in light of the coronavirus outbreak: The ABC singing competition is suspending production, effective immediately, TVLine has learned.

Filming has been halted to ensure that contestants can get home to their families, according to a source; the rest of the production is working remotely, and has been since last week. For now, episodes will continue to air as scheduled through the beginning of the live shows, which were slated to kick off in mid-April, but producers will continue to evaluate things on a week-to-week basis. (Idol currently airs Sundays and Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.)

Before the virus scare, Wheel of Fortune filmed a week of episodes in partnership with Carnival Cruise Line. It was supposed to air March 30-April 3, but it has now been pulled and replaced with a week of reruns from October 2018. Carnival has shut down all of its operations until further notice. It is unknown when or if the Carnival episodes will air.

Assume they will either air in the summer, or if all else fails, sometime in season 38. I can see why Wheel didn't want that week to run, as it would send a bad message during the pandemic.
But PLEASE put Alex Trebek in a bubble! And Pat too! We need them!

And what's Vanna, chopped liver? :p

Put her in a bubble too. ;-)
And Johnny Gilbert while we're at it. Unbelievable, 95 years old and still the voice of Jeopardy.

"Wait! Wait!" on NPR has made yet another change. I think I'm remembering correctly that a female voice announced last week the show was recorded in front of an audience, which was not true. This week I definitely heard it is recorded in front of no one.

And unlike last week, Peter Sagal is in the Federal Toilet Paper Repository aka the studios of WBEZ Chicago, and the celebrity panelists were in separate locations. The audio quality was so perfect I couldn't tell anything was different. What was obviously missing was applause, which was true last week.

And if you don't think we can laugh at coronavirus, you are very wrong.

Many NPR shows have been produced from multiple locations this week. Morning Edition and ATC were having one host at HQ along with their technical directors and the newscast unit; essentially everyone else was remote.

I couldn't tell the difference on-air during Morning Edition.

Getting back to TV, Stephen Colbert was the guest, a last minute substitute, and he said he started out doing his show without an audience and then ended up doing it at home. In a suit. In the bathtub. Without pants.

If anyone else listened, can anyone tell me the punchline because I couldn't understand it.

What sound does a dog make?

Ruff, ruff.

What sound does a cow make?

Moo.

No, ruff, ruff.
