'Jeopardy,' 'Wheel of Fortune' cancel audiences due to COVID-19 Fears

Last night they showed an audience as Alex was walking in, and Johnny pointed to Alex before clapping.

That was likely taken from prior tapings with full audiences (as Wheel had been doing), or they simply focused on the taping's remaining contestants and their guests.

Also, Johnny does not announce every episode in the studio. Roughly half of them have stand-ins doing the announcer's work with Johnny dubbing over them later. Usually it's done by the guy from the Clue Crew, and sometimes Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton does it as well.

My point is they're faking it, and I just don't believe they should. Johnny is also not shown in every episode, so they didn't need to fake his being there if he wasn't.

Peter Sagal admits the audience for "Wait! Wait!" these days is fake.

Speaking of which, I was wondering how long it would take them to do a show made up of flashbacks. They might have done it by now. Today's show was put together entirely from shows where they traveled outside of Chicago and, in one place, outside of Chase Bank Auditorium, back when they could.

By the way, I-64 does not go to Savannah. A later episode they did part of was from Richmond, where I-64 does go.

And on one of the shows, one of the fake stories, appropriately enough for now, was about a sports team mascot that is a roll of toilet paper, in an area where most of the wood for toilet paper is grown.

Some regular episodes were scheduled to tape minus an audience. The tournament was never one having taped earlier. Moreover, audience shots have not been a feature of all episodes.

Some updates on the Wheel front.

10 of the 12 shelved episodes have been given new tentative airdates. The 5 shows that make up "Collette UK Getaway Week", originally scheduled for April 13-17, will now air August 3-7. The 5 shows that make up "Carnival Week of Fun!", originally scheduled for March 30-April 3, will now air August 31-September 4. Both weeks come roughly a month after their respective sponsors resume some (not all) trips. Two other episodes are still in limbo since Wheel refuses to have weeks that are part new and part reruns; they likely won't air until at least three more episodes are produced to go with them.

Also, last week, Vanna White did an interview with NBC affiliate KMIR in Palm Springs and gave some updates on resuming production at Wheel. She said that they will hopefully be back in the studio within the next two months, that they likely will continue to tape without audiences, and that they are making rearrangements to the set to comply with social distancing. https://nbcpalmsprings.com/2020/06/01/nbcares-silver-linings-vanna-white/

Sooooooo.....does this mean Pat Sajak and contestants in masks?
I'd rather keep airing reruns.

I wonder what TPIR, Jeopardy and Family Feud will look like in the fall. I could see a TPIR with every other seat empty. A Family Feud where families are all wearing masks and no family members over 65 yrs allowed.

Price is Right also has issues such as the close interaction between contestants and the host; staging considerations for elements where multiple contestants are on stage; Contestants’ row; even sanitation of the handles on the wheel.

That’s just one show example. With all of the things they need to factor in, it’s going to take a while.

June 12 was supposed to be the season finale of Wheel had the rest of the season finished as scheduled. Jeopardy! would have went until the first Friday of August, I believe.

Assuming the Carnival and Collette weeks don't get delayed again, this will not only be the first time in history that syndicated Wheel of Fortune has new episodes while Jeopardy! does not, but also the first known time that new episodes of syndie WOF are aired in the month of August.

The Jeopardy! season finale was supposed to be on July 24. Jeopardy!'s reruns so far are random games from each contestant in last year's Tournament of Champions.

Some pricing games could be put on monitors or seven segment displays. Range Game, One Away and Money Game could work on monitors, while other games could take the lead of the seven segment display on Any Number.

"America's Funniest Home Videos" finally did an episode without an audience. And the winner (of the $100,000 prize) was at the ABC affiliate in their home market.

Alfonso was by himself with empty chairs and tables and fake applause, and audience members from past episodes on the big screen.

It concerns me that they're still giving away a Disney cruise on next week's episode.

they have to keep the Di$ney product placement instead of giving away something useful like a college scholarship or a car, and they still have to pay gift taxes on the cruise

And Disney has been cancelling cruises left and right, some all the way to October. So really, the winner wouldn't take the trip until 2021.
Might as well give away a 7-day trip to either Disneyland or Disney World with hotel accommodations at a Disney resort and call it good. The latter opens 7/11 and the former will likely open in July too. With masks of course, but hopefully those will go away as the weeks go on.

A couple people from both sides have revealed that Jeopardy! and Wheel have both resumed contestant auditions, although they are now done one-on-one via Zoom or Skype instead of the usual gatherings of 60-ish people in a hotel ballroom. They are only auditioning people within driving distance of the studio.

In addition to fake applause, this week's episodes have fake laughter.

I guess those of us who grew up with sitcoms not taped before and audience should consider that normal.

They have always had a canned laugh track. I've watched multiple Tom Bergeron episodes with the same women laughing behind Tom's voiceover every few videos.
