Jerry Butler Singer Known as the Iceman Passes Away at 85

Butler had the original hit version of a song that later would be a hit for Tony Orlando and Dawn under a different title: "He Will Break Your Heart" for Butler, "He Don't Love You" for Orlando. I've always wondered why that happened, and whether any other songs have ever been hits under two titles despite being 100 percent identical.

CKLW kept in and "Never Give You Up" in its gold library through at least the mid-70s.Only The Strong Survive was a favorite of mine then and it remains so today. Certainly a song that vanished from the airwaves as soon as it fell off the Top 40 charts. Perhaps it resonated with the "Soul" format.

Jerry Butler's "(I'm Just Thinking About) Cooling Out", while a minor chart hit in 1978, is a longtime major staple in the Carolina Beach Music scene. Kinda what "Freebird" is to classic rock radio. It's still played often on CBM stations like 94.9 The Surf in North Myrtle Beach.
