Jesse Colin Young of the Youngbloods Dies at 83

The Youngbloods' hit Get Together was written by someone named Chet Powers. He was also known as Dino Valenti, a member of the San Francisco band Quicksilver Messenger Service. He wrote one of their best known songs Fresh Air. Chet died over 30 years ago.

Another cool Youngbloods story is the album with Get Together was produced by Felix Pappalardi, who later worked with Cream and Mountain. The third Youngbloods album, Elephant Mountain, was produced by a young guitar player named Charlie Daniels. Charlie would later pick up the fiddle and lead the Charlie Daniels Band with hits like Devil Went Down To Georgia.

They were of course, best known for "Get Together," which was originally recorded and released in 1967. But it didn't chart until 1969 when it was picked up and used in a public service campaign, and the rest, as they say, is history.

As a solo artist, he recorded "Ridgetop," which got both AOR and soft rock airplay in the mid-'70s. It was about his home in the forested hills of Northern California, and the pleasure he experienced not only living there but returning there after a busy day. One of my all-time favorite songs. Sadly, he lost that dream home of his to a wildfire about 20 years later.

I worked with Jolie Valenti, Dino Valenti's son, a few years back with Narada Michael Walden on a remake of "Get Together". Jolie told me his dad originally wrote "Let's Get Together" (original title) back in 1959 because Jolie and his brothers were constantly fighting with each other as kids--as brothers sometimes do--and Dino wanted them to calm down and get along.
