Jewelz Lopez formally of KTU joins PULSE 87

R & R reports Jewelz Lopez joins WNYZ.

From R & R...
Jewelz Lopez is the newest addition to WNYZ (Pulse 87)/New York, where she'll be MD/middays starting Monday. New Yorkers are pretty familiar with the lovely Ms. Lopez, who did late-nights on Clear Channel's WKTU for nine years and was also heard nationwide for a while on Sirius Active Rock channel Octane. Feel free to pester her at 718-421-9400.

Jewelz is cool. Liked her when she was on KTU-WHO. Maybe Pulse 87 will bring on a few fresh 20-somethings. Would be nice to give a few newbies a chance.

Nice addition. If in not mistaken Jewelz was also on some Latin video channel such as Mun2. I woulldn't be surprised if we see more former KT get a clue personalities on Pulse

Actually Morpheux, I'm thinking along the lines of JerseyDude! :)

For the type of station that 'KTU was, having Broadway Bill Lee, Freddie Colon, Diane Prior, etc. made sense because they were familiar voices heard on past stations whereas you can relate a history to.

For a station like Pulse 87, the key words here are....young, hip, energetic. Jewelz fits that mode perfectly! There are some others that are young that I would like to see there....Nikki at Nite (Party 105), Vinnie Da Ginnie (WSIA). But NO doubt...go for the youthful feel! This is the type of station Pulse is.

But back on topic.....CONGRATULATIONS JEWELZ!

Right now he's tied up as a part-timer, but any chance Brooklyn Own's Joe Causi could make the switch to Pulse and do evenings full-time?

With this hire, Jewelz is technically back on TV! :D

I'm hoping that Joel doesn't hire any of the 45-plus KTU DJ's. KTU has the old disco guys. Thats a good look for them. I hoping that Pulse will hire some 20s DJs. Joe,Al Bandiero and the rest of those guys are nice, but the 1970s is long gone.

Don't turn this into an OLDER disc jockey bashing board. Some of "OLD" broadcasters can still kick it...

Can't believe they haven't made a move for Steve Bartel yet! He's doing overnights at KTU but was the MD at Orlando's Party when it was dance intensive, then he moved over to a now defunct Cox San Antonio dance-friendly rhythm/chr.

Bartel was actually the PD at 95.3 Party (after Phil Michaels), and he then worked as a PD in Dallas on 106.7, which you might be confusing with San Antonio's 106.7 Jamz, which was Dance leaning as well for a whil. Anyways, Bartel's on-air presentation was a bit Hot ACish at times to be honest, and during his tenure 95.3 Party dropped in the ratings and became less Dance-oriented. He never sounded as youthful and energetic as Vic The Latino (best MD at 95.3 Party hands down), or Obie & Lil Shawn. Since 106.7 Jamz San Antonio was brought up, I remember it had a great guy doing nights, his name started with a D. Might be a good fit.
Oh and Lucy Lopez out of Power 96 is awesome but I doubt she's gonna leave Miami.

Bartel is the APD at KTU. He isnt going anywhere

Jewelz sounds so enthusiastic and excited to be on Pulse!
I share her excitment! The station gets better and better!
It has a definate creative edge..and is "very" New York!

Hey Tony, do you know she mentioned you and the coalition on the radio yesterday?

That's right, it was Dallas. You're correct in pointing out that he was the PD at the time; after Phil Michaels left to program WPYM, Bartel likely had greater say in music selection. Jill Strada became the MD at WPYO and obviously she had a better ear for hip hop than dance (and what a great tie in for this forum, she's now programming Hot 97 in NY). I agree that it would not be very likely for Lucy Lopez to leave Power- likely the same reason for why it would take a good offer to recruit Bartel from KTU- although I'm pretty sure Michelle Visage is available.

I'm confident that after a short while once the advertisers buy into the concept of Pulse, it will be a lot easier to assemble the dream team we're thinking up. Some others to consider: Ted Noah, who did WZBZ Buzz in Atlantic City, he's now at Sunny 104.3 (?!?) in West Palm Beach. Chris Shebel of Energy Chicago fame was last seen doing swing duties at WILV in Chicago as of late 2006 (so this might have changed by now). Obie and Lil' Shawn would make a great fit as well as Vic Latino. Alan Freed, formerly of XM's BPM would also be a great candidate- I always thought he had good energy for the format. Someone who would be GREAT for the station would be "Naughty" Natalia, who used to do the club remotes for Party in Miami. She stayed with COX through the format change and is now a dj on 93 Rock. If memory serves right, she moved from California to be part of Party. She certainly has the right look for a Dance format!

Ohhh...yes I did! As a matter of fact, I had spoken to Jewelz that day for quite a bit! She is SUCH a sweetie! She has known about the coalition for quite awhile and it was very nice of her to give us a "shout", especially in the manner that she did it. I was in my car when I've heard it....I wish I had taped it!
