Jim Dai's first morning shift on KWJZ. Is he filling in, or is this F/T ?

This morning, when I turned on Smooth Jazz, I was shocked to hear Sandusky's Jim Dai on 98.9. Is this part time, or full time? Does he fit with this format, or does he sound like your typical robo liner jock, and the same old Jim Dai weve heard since 1981 on KSEA and KIXI. Jim's a nice guy, but, IMO, he is not a JAZZ jock! Sounds like he's reading liners and it just destroyed the flavor of KWJZ. Did not sound FRESH, but stale and the same old same old! Whinning? Sure. His very first vacation a day stop set, he REPEATED the name of the contestant, and the prize about 10 times in about 90 seconds. Professional? OMG. Sounds like small market radio to me.
Two things. Dai does not belong on this format, and if Marc Kaye keeps him there, than it comes down to just plain liking the guy a lot, as a person, more than a perfect format fit.

Geez...give the guy a break. Just started the shift, new format...etc.
IMHO he was certainly no "robo-jock" on KIXI...In past few years as Jim & Jim show he truly blossomed into a real personality. He was great at relating to his audience. Lots of consistently entertaining bits in morning show.

And c'mon "Smooth Jazz" is not exactly a personality format. It took Matt Reidy years to work his charm on that time slot. Give Dai some slack.

My point that I was trying to make, is that KWJZ would sound better with Jazz enthusiasts broadcasters. Take their Midday guy, Cedrick James. Mel Odem has been doing Jazz on the FM since 1978, and Jazz is the only thing he's done, because his heart is in the Jazz format. Yes, Mel can do other formats, but his heart is in Jazz! Not the same feel with Mr. Dai. Grantid, Jim lost his previous gig, but jumping on Jazz, like it's "just another format", is like the Groz leaving JR and working for KWJZ. Fish out of water. That's my point.

As the poster above said - give Dai a break. Jocks transition from format to format all the time. He may not be your ideal "smooth jazz enthusiast" right out of the gate - but I bet he'll become one very quickly.

As for the contesting blunder - here's a news flash - jocks occasionally make mistakes on the air!

Jee..sure hope that it ends up being permanent. He'd be great fit for them ... and just because shift #1 wasn't spot-on doesn't mean he couldn't settle into it VERY quickly. Jim's a very adaptable pro and would be a great complement for that format. Am glad the place is open-minded enough to let him back in the front door after their KIXI fiasco to explore the "what if...." angle with using him again. Says a lot about the group that I wouldn't have expected and I'm definitely willing to scream "kudos" for being so top shelf about it.

Agreed. Solid air talent. Give the guy a chance. From a sales perspective KWJZ has always been about the music. My feeling is the station can only be hurt by a talent that gets in the way of the music. Jim is a pro and will compliment the music and learn the format. He also does great live spots, not that anyone on this board cares, but it helps the station bottom line.

to the guy that said Jim Dai is a liner card reader never once listened to Jim on KIXI. He was one of the most entertaining morning shows in the area and had the best sense of humor. Maybe that's not was KWJZ needs, but it wouldn't hurt their morning numbers right now.

Re: Jim Dai on KWJZ

Called the station and talked to Dianna Rose...

..she says Jim's just 'filling-in' for now.....

Wow. You are clearly not a broadcaster! I would love to spend some time with you on your first day on the job...I am almost sure that you most likely burned a batch or two of fries! Most jocks do not work in a format in which they are P1's. Radio is show business and I'm sure Mr. Dai is just glad to be playing music from this decade for a change. He is an upstanding guy and and a great jock....let's at least give him one more show before we condemn him.

COULD BE FULL-TIME for DIA

Just got word that KWJZ 'WILL' make a decision on Jim Dia for F/T later this week....
