Joan Howard Maurer, Moe's daughter and author of several Three Stooges books

A belated RIP to Joan, who died September 21 at age 94. No cause of death given. She had also appeared in a handful of Stooges films as a child.

I own several of her books. Very informative about the Three Stooges. RIP!

Her best was the biography of Curly. Not only did it cover his life, but the lives of everyone in the Horwitz/Howard family, going back to the Stooges' parents, Solomon and Jenny.

Moe, Shemp, Curly, and non-actor brother Jack didn't change their last name legally to Howard until both of their parents passed (Jennie died in 1939, and Solomon in 1941). That had to have been sometime during the war, but before Curly's stroke in 1946 (the date is not specified in Joan's book about Curly). Moe and Shemp had started using Howard as a stage name around 1919, and Curly adopted it when he joined Ted Healy, Moe, and Larry in 1932.

Their oldest brother, Irving, also not an actor, died in 1939 a few weeks before their mother. Jack was the last surviving brother, dying in 1976 at age 83.
