Joe Kelly to Tulsa morning radio

P

Phantom

Guest
Joe Kelly, one of the co-hosts on the "Midnight Trucking Show" on WBAP in the Fort Worth-Dallas area, is leaving to be a morning talk show host in Tulsa.

Alas, I have forgotten the station :).

Before WBAP, Kelly did mornings on KLIF 570 AM in Dallas. His ratings were poor.

His style is aggressive, and his voice is grating -- to say the least.

KRMG bound

That would be to KRMG...John Erling is stepping down.

Well, get ready to set your 740 AM car button to another station.

Kelly will drive you nuts.

I agree. Erling was no Okie poster boy when he arrived from up north, but KRMG IS TULSA. I would listen to anyone there as long as they stay plugged into the community.

KRMG still has a bunch of folks on staff with deep roots here and no matter what corporate may do, the sense of community and localism shows on the air.

Dallas did.

That's why he is leaving.

Now it's Tulsa's turn.

Wait 'til you hear Kelly's voice.

It is like nails across a blackboard.

Is this Joe Kelly guy one of them "Truckin' Bozo" guys?? I'm just curious.

Yes, same guy.

WBAP 820 AM Fort Worth-Dallas -- "Midnight Trucking Show".

As I said in my earlier post, Kelly was on KLIF 570 AM in Dallas in morning drive and bombed.

KLIF is no blockbuster, but the ratings in AM improved after he was replaced.

If Tulsa commuters like their politics hard right, you might like Kelly. He has little respect for his listeners.

A know-it-all talk show host.

Well, I think I've heard him before. I have a vague idea of who he is--and what he sounds like. If, as you say, his brand of politics "leans to the right"......As in "waaaay to the right"......Well, he certainly isn't taking too much of a risk/gamble by going from Texas to Oklahoma!! LOL! I mean, it's not like he's headed for the east (or west) coast somewhere.

You say he has "little respect for his callers". I assume when you say that, you mean those callers who disagree with him, yes?---Perhaps that will be what ultimately makes him--or breaks him--in Tulsa.

We'll soon find out!

Kelly is so far right that he falls off that side of the Earth.

>Well, he certainly isn't taking too much of

Few cities are as conservative than Dallas.

The day JFK was killed, a full-page ad appeared in a Dallas newspaper with front and profile photos of Kennedy as if he were in a wanted poster.

Dallas politics is as nutty as it gets.

True. I always thought Tulsa was a bit more moderate than Oklahoma City, however.

> You say he has "little respect for his callers".

Yeah, even those he might agree with might "get it" from Kelly because he thinks he knows it all.

Translated: Kelly acts like a wise guy on the air. He can be a smart ass.

He should be a perfect replacement for Erling. Sounds like a similar personality, except for the "far right" part. Erling came to Tulsa with much the same reputation - know it all, smart ass, rude to callers, but the city eventually accepted him and his ratings grew. He also was creative as well. There's more to hosting morning radio than just being a "smart ass".

Re: Joe Kelly

Would you goes go get a chat room for yourselves. Kelly is fine. Sean Hannity isn't blessed with the "voice" but seems to do just fine. It ain't about the voice. It's about relatability.

What "goes" are you talking about? Batman said he can't stand the man's voice--and that's his opinion. I was just asking if Kelly was who I thought he was.

Read your statement above aloud:

"Would you goes go get a chat room for yourselves?"

For a "talkshowguru", you could use an English lesson or two ... guru.

FYI, Hannity sounds like a voiceover artist compared to Kelly.

You are right about relatability, and Kelly relates primarily to the extreme right-wing element in this country.

In the 1960s, such people would have belonged to such organizations as the John Birch Society and espoused hate and intolerance.

Give the guy a chance. There has never been a station in this market which has conditioned its listeners to listen as well as KRMG. (Well, maybe the old KAKC). Simply said, if Kelly bombs on KRMG, he would bomb anywhere. He will never find a softer landing spot.

If the program director over at KRMG understands what he is dealing with, he should be one nervous dude.

Re: KRMG bound

I heard Joe this morning on KRMG and channel 6. Seems like he will be good. I also heard that KRMG is picking up The Fox News Channel Radio.

Give the guy a chance. Don't be jealous that he has a job that you don't.

I was just asking who he was. I don't really know much about the man. So I sure hope that nobody here thinks I was slamming him! I was just curious about who he was/is.

I don't want to work in Tulsa.

Been there ... done that.

Just said the guy is a right-winger. He is.

And his voice is terrible. It is. That is not too important these days. But as I said, on the trucking show, it sounded like "nails on a blackboard" to me.

My opinion.

Oh great, the Fox News Channel -- they report, they decide.

Run by that Great Fat Republican -- Roger Ailes.

As opposed to ABC News, reporting direct from the Poliburo? Every news service has their biases, certainly ABC and CBS news do - not sure NBC news even has a radio presence anymore.
