Joe O'Brien former KSTP Mpls/St. Paul front page in R&R

Don't know if everyone reads R&R...or if you've received your 7/21 issue...but this is one of the cover stories. Check it out. I've heard O'Brien's a pretty good guy...and this piece says a lot. Look it over, and discuss...

Had to post the article in a couple of postings...exceeded 10,000 character limit...so, read on...

A Fresh Perspective
Talk veteran recounts his year-long sabbatical

Al Peterson, Radio and Records N/T/S editor

Just a little more than a year ago News/Talk radio veteran Joe O'Brien took stock of his life and decided he wasn't happy with what he saw. While he had a great job, a loving family, and a comfortable lifestyle, after 27 years in Radio O'Brien was becoming increasingly aware of a sense of burnout that was taking a visible toll on his mind, body and family.
Although many industry professionals will identify with O'Brien's sense of burnout, I suspect few would admit it publicly. But in these days of multi-station management responsibilities, escalating FCC fines, shareholder pressures and more, it's probably a pretty safe bet that many of us have asked at one time or another, "What am I doing and where am I going with my life?"

January 2006
It's winter in Minnesota and for the first time in my adult life there is no paycheck coming in. Orders go out to the household to batten-down the financial hatches. Good thing we kept the overhead low even when the big money was coming in. Time now to face the hard question: "What do I want to do?" I start networking hard. I'd always wondered which people were my real friends and which people liked me because of what I could do for them through the radio station. Now I know. Looks like my Christmas card list will be much shorter next year. But the real friends are very real indeed and I'm thankful for each and every one.
