Re: John D. Rose, personality and manging partner at Henderson's WIZS, dies at 6
It was truly a pleasure working for John Rose.
He was as "old school" as they come---making the comment on more than one occasion that he wished he could throw every "g-d damn" computer in the building out into a ditch and go back to reel to reel tape.
He still reported live local news three times a day (8am, 12:35pm, & 5pm) right up until the night before he died. He was still pulling police and sheriff's reports every day beginning at 7am for his local news.
Live Local Election coverage was an annual tradition at WIZS and John pulled one more Election coverage shift on October 9 complete with his unmatched love for Big Band music. Henderson listeners were treated to over two hours of the sounds Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, the Dorsey Brothers, Les and Larry Elgart, etc. All at the very capable hands of the master himself--John Rose.
It was obvious how happy he was that night, playing his favorite music over a tiny radio station in Henderson, NC---and we were happy too.
I had already had a love for Big Band before I worked at WIZS. John allowed me to broadcast a Big Band show every Friday night from February 2006 through May 2007---a rarity in the age of Radio. I'll never forget my time with that show or what I learned from John.
When he left us last Thursday I can almost bet that there was a tiny, highly unusual grin on his face knowing that he got in one last Big Band show.
Sleep warm my friend.
