John Garabedian buying new FM in East Harwich

Maybe Garabedian should follow the example of ed and Carol Perry, who own WATD-95.9 in Marshfield.

They run it as a hyper-local station. The only non-local programs are AP Network News updates and U/Mass-Amherst sports. Otherwise, it's all local.

The 98.7 Harwich signal area should cover the Cape from Mashpee to the elbow in Chatham, and up to Wellfleet. There should be enough of a market to attract enough advertisers to make a WATD-style local format work.

They could also go the WQRC route and make it another hot AC station, but 'QRC covers the whole cape well(I don't know where it fades out, but I've heard it in Newport, RI.)

Some fun facts about the station and the purchase:

In 2005, Garabedian requested that 98.7 be allocated to Nantucket as a B1, up against requests for a class A in East Harwich and an A in South Chatham. East Harwich got the allocation.

There were three bidders on the frequency at last year's auction: John Fuller of CT fame, Jeff Shapiro (who won and built WAZK Nantucket) and David and Deborah Wang DBA Liveair Communications. I don't know what their connection to the business is. The bidding started at $45,000 and they won it for $55,000.

Garabedian paid $10,000 for the option to buy the station back in May while he investigated possible transmitter sites. He must've found one. The current CP is for a 3-bay Shiveley off the top of one of the water tanks in Chatham, 6kw directional, protecting WPLM-FM to the west.

The calls "WKFY" have been requested.

I'm glad that Garabedian bought it, Live Air Communications didn't really do anything with WKFY. I mean they did, but they couldn't find a good location for the tower.
