John Lodge, Moody Blues Singer and Bassist, Dies at 82

Heart just sank a bit more reading this. One of my dad's (also passed away) absolute favorite bands. They've grown on me as the years pass by. I believe Justin Hayward and Patrick Moraz are the only two former members still with us.

This leaves Justin Hayward as the last surviving member of the “classic lineup” of the Moody Blues, namely those involved in the ”classic seven” albums from 1967-72. I still love listening to those recordings even though they are 50-60 years old. A reminder of an incredible time in music and of Progressive Rock FM Radio of that era.

That's sad. Both Lodge and Justin Hayward have been performing on solo tours this year. There was talk of a Moody Blues reunion or tour, I believe.

That leaves Hayward and Patrick Moraz as the last surviving members.

I just wonder if the Classic Rock stations that don't play or rarely play the Moody Blues will be doing tributes. They were big on the old AOR stations that I listened to: the old WKDA FM I forget the call letters of the old WABB FM Mobile and the Zoo in Dallas*. Or course they had some top 40 success too. Some folks believe The Moody Blues influenced ELO. Apparently their music doen't test well and their original fans have "aged out". I saw them in the old Omni in Atlanta. No pryor tech, light show or on stage antics. Amazing sound for the Omni which had a bad reputation for concert sound.

* It's been been over 45 or 50 years. My memory might be a little off with the call letters. Also I forgot an amazing AM: KAAY at night.

I wore out the grooves of "Seventh Sojourn" freshman year in college, had all of the "classic seven" except for Days of Future Passed. They made the kind of light progressive music with "deep" (or at least we thought at the time) lyrics that appealed to 18-year-olds just starting to figure out life away from home. There was this girl I met that year who was also a big fan of the Moodies; I lost my marijuana virginity to her. I still go back to those days whenever I hear anything from the Moodies on SiriusXM's Deep Tracks. RIP, John.

"Just open your eyes and realize the way it's always been." -- "The Balance," from A Question of Balance. I told you their lyrics were deep.
