John Madden has retired from NBC Sunday Night Football

Al Michaels has had a history of having a short fuse with booth partners. He absolutely despised Boomer Esiason when they were paired. If Cris doesn't mesh with Al this year, by the start of the 2011 season one of them won't be in the booth.
I pretty much knew that Collinsworth would be the guy since he skipped the Tampa Bay-Seattle Game.
To say there will be no one like Madden again is the greates understatement of the century.
He may not have had a deep knowledge of the game like Jaworski does, but he had a passion for it that was better than anybody I've heard so far in my lifetime.
And the fact that he was a part of a Super Bowl in 4 networks (CBS, FOX, ABC, and NBC) makes him truly unique.
The game franchise will definitley go on; So we will see a lot more Madden in the future.

I've read several stories insinuating that the death of Harry Kalas affected John Madden's decision to retire. I'm sure he was planning to do this soon, but I bet that had a slight effect on him. They were the same age (73). Obviously it's the end of an era.

Not sure if anyone caught Dick Ebersol on SportsCenter last night, but I was a little stunned by something he said. He was talking about how John Madden was a TV legend and someone viewers loved to bring into their homes. Then he said something like, "Just like you guys have Chris Berman (at ESPN)."

Was Madden really that beloved? I've heard nothing but cheers about his retirement from my friends.
Madden had his own slang, which translated well to the last two or three generations. Thus the praise.
If you were raised on Rome, Ferrall or the edgier form of Sportsradio, then, Coach's retirement would bring cheers.
Best thing about Madden's retirement: He's around to hear the tributes..and detractors.
You have to admire someone that is able to go out on his own terms.
Keith Jackson is another great that went out on his own. I still think its cool to hear Pat Summerall on the Cotton Bowl each year.

up, and stop and smell the roses. I'm not sure there's
a connection between his retirement and Harry Kalas'

Probably not, but I think his point was an acknowledgement of Berman's longtime work there. Wasn't he part of ESPN's original 1979 launch?
