John Sterling Retirement News Conference Sat. 4/20/2024

There are plenty of number-two announcers in other markets who have the right sound to move up and capably fill John's shoes: two I've heard and like are Dave Fleming, John Miller's sidekick on SF Giants radio, and Will Flemming, who works with Dave O'Brien in Boston.

Yankees play-by-play announcer John Sterling to come out of retirement to call playoff games, per report

Legendary New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling is coming out of retirement to call the team's postseason games, reports The Athletic. Sterling retired in April. WFAN, which broadcasts Yankees games on the radio, recently made Sterling an offer. Yankees brass signed off on the move last week

Sterling will join "Evan and Tiki" on WFAN at 3 PM ET today - Thursday 9/5/2024 - to discuss the report.
He'll likely confirm it and make an official announcement.

Edit: John confirmed the report: will announce the last two series of the regular season (vs. Orioles and Pirates at Yankee Stadium),
then all playoff games home and away.
I can't believe I am saying it, but it will be good to have him back.

It is a two-way street, however. John had to first be invited back by Chris Oliviero, Audacy New York Market President.
Plus, be approved by the Yankees (likely team President Randy Levine + team Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost).

Granted, this was likely Oliviero's idea in an attempt to goose post-season ratings with Yankees brass eager to go along.

Unfortunately, this likely doesn't bode well for the future of Justin Shackil (37) and Emmanuel Berbari (25) - both Fordham grads.
As for Rickie Ricardo (near 60): maybe they want to keep him on the Spanish language broadcasts for the postseason - TBD for 2025.
Rickie seems to be favored by the older set who call in to WFAN - he provides a flair similar to Sterling's.

Seems that WFAN management and the Yankees favor style, glitz + glamor over the (relatively) "duller" substance that the younger pair bring.
Apparently they haven't done quite enough to impress the decision makers - none have grabbed a firm hold on the position,
enough to prevent Sterling from being invited back, even if temporary.

I listened to Justin one night, and he was really dull. Had nothing to say. I felt bad for Suzyn, who was just sitting there. Lots of dead air. Lots of host-read advertising and promos for upcoming games, but no real chemistry between the two announcers. They really need someone who knows baseball, and it doesn't matter how old they are. Noah Eagle is in his 20s, and he would be much better than Justin.

I can see the job going to Rickie. Him and Suzyn have a good chemistry and there is a nice flow to the broadcast.

Meanwhile, former WFAN host Mike Francesa doesn't like John coming back. Yet it didn't bother Mike when he himself came back to WFAN:

“I don’t think it’s fair to the guys who have been doing the games,” Francesa said. “Sooner or later, you’ve got to let somebody else work. It’s just the way it is. He’s had his day in the sun, he’s had his championships. Let the other kids work.”

Yet he didn't think about that when he decided to come back to WFAN.

Didn’t he come back twice.

Mike is right. His was a different circumstance which merits no comparison. In that case, WFAN management got impatient with the Chris Carlin/Bart Scott/Maggie Gray show and rather than allow it to grow–as they did with Mike and the Mad Dog–they blinked at the first opportunity to make a move, leading to Francesa's return.

In Sterling's case, I believe John's ego won out more than any decision made by the station or the team. He could have said "no" and let the youngstas and Rickie Ricardo have the chance to step things up for the playoffs.

My hope was that they use him as the Tigers utilized then 88-year-old Ernie Harwell during their run through the 2006 postseason, ending with the World Series: Middle innings of home games only. But that doesn't sound like the plan here. Sterling does not need to call every pitch of every game at this point, and after sitting out virtually the whole season he should not.

Also, IIRC and FWIW, Francesa and Sterling may still share an agent.
