Joke of the Day: World Series games on the radio

Of course anyone with an interest in the World Series will probably be watching the games on FOX TV but radio listeners are shitouttaluck this weekend. Sat and Sun night games scheduled at 4:57 PT are going to 1260 KGIL because of KSPN's committment to USC football (Sat) and Lakers basketball (Sun)

Why KGIL??? Who decided that? How is that allowed to happen?!?

I guess the ESPN network "decided" that. They probably take a subordinate position to local affiliates when those local affiliates are under contract with a team (the Trojans and the Lakers) to give that team's broadcasts precedence over anything else. As to how KGIL got the "gig" I guess no other station was available. Usually KTLK 1150 gets games like these but I don't know why they're not getting the Sat and Sun games. If they still carry the Kings NHL games there's no Kings games on Sat or sunday. KLAA carried a few of the ESPN feeds of the NLCS but they have a Ducks game on Sat night. It's a real head scratcher for sure. KFWB has the Clippers on Sat night but not Sunday. I guess KABC didn't want it.

Anyone out there know how things like this usually get worked out when there are schedule conflicts?

Actually this arrangement has been extant through at least a couple of 1260 Format flips and a call letter change or two. The first time I noticed it when I was living in North Hollywood near the 710 transmitter I thought it was bleed over.

I just don't understand how no FM station was available?

I do not think that a World Series without the Dodgers or Angels would attract many listeners in LA anyway. Also, if ESPN insists on saying "ESPN Radio" throughout the broadcast, they are not going to get many takers from competing station owners like Clear Channel, CBS or Citadel.

So that's why at Angel Stadium you never see any Yankees hats, t-shirts or fans?? <sarcasm stand>

In SoCal, there's lots of transplants from NYC, NY metro, NJ, and Philadelphia area, but you must know that, right?

Radio station managers make (or, SHOULD make) decisions for two reasons: to improve ratings or revenue. If carrying one, or maybe two, ballgames isn't going to impact either of those elements, than why bother? You may be able to get a few listeners (if they know where to look for the game), but a last-minute decision to carry those games doesn't afford time to sell spots locally, so unless you're getting paid by the syndicator, you also won't impact revenue.

The transplants will watch the game on TV. They will plan their day around getting home or to their favorite pub to "see" the game, not just listen to it. I think baseball works on the radio during the long haul of the regular season when most fans can't see every game at the stadium or on TV. Come World Series time though, it's must see TV if you team is in it.

KGIL is simulcasting the ESPN game on AM 540 in Tijuana. AM 800/FM 98.9 from Tijuana is also airing the ESPN game. Not sure how AM 540 can beam ESPN Radio into San Diego when there's already an ESPN affilliate serving the same city.
