Jon Gruden replacing Tony Kornheiser on Monday Night Football

ESPN contributor Tony Kornheiser is getting replaced on Monday Night Football this fall by former NFL coach Jon Gruden:

Despite what the story notes as the reason, a part of me believes Kornheiser has always known his time in the booth was going to be short, as he himself has often joked about his MNF work on PTI.

Given Gruden's history, he literally could become the next John Madden, if he plays his cards right.

"Kornheiser cited a fear of flying in his decision to leave after three years..."

Make that the anti-Madden...
 
Watching Gruden on MNF will be interesting, because he's always been one of these guys that says what's on his mind and can be brutally honest, unlike most other color commentators out there. It gives the booth an extra credible football mind alongside Ron Jaworski, and I can see them having plenty of debates. I didn't watch much of the recent NFL Draft, but from what I heard, Gruden did a pretty decent job.
 
It'll be really interesting to see how Gruden performs. But I don't quite understand how ESPN automatically assumes he'll be good in the booth even though he's never done game analysis and didn't even audition for the job. Can't say I'll miss Kornheiser, though...

Meanwhile, today on PTI, Tony said that he likes the fact that he is retiring in the same year as Brett Favre and John Madden, so that they can all be eligible for the Hall of Fame at the same time! :D
 
I'm assuming its sarcasm from Tony. A slightly above average newspaper columnist, he couldn't wear Howard Cosell's toupee.

Great agents secure great gigs for mediocre talent. Tony is yet another case of management who believed because someone can be occasionally elequent on paper, they are a slam dunk behind the mic. (See: Around The Horn)

I look forward to ex-and future Coach Gruden's analysis, and thank the powers that be that Kornheiser is relegated off the NFL beat.
 
Other than Jaws, ESPN's MNF is crap. It's always been second rate even dating back to the Sunday Night Football days. All hype with zero substance which seems to be ESPN's bread and butter over the last 10 years.

Heck, it is their Sunday Night Football telecast, just delayed by one day and draped in the captive history of the old MNF on ABC. They're not fooling me.

I don't get all the venom spewed toward Kornheiser and ESPN for MNF. Kornheiser doesn't take himself so seriously, and seemed to balance the "sports is god" mentality of ESPN. To me, he always reminds me that it's just a game, and not really worth getting so upset about. Glad he's still on PTI.

And I always thought SNF on ESPN was great, and I think MNF is far better than NBC's Sunday night.

Just my opinion.

BTW, I think Gruden could be great if he decides to do this long-term (like Madden.)

Kornheiser is a newspaper guy, not a broadcaster, and it shows. I'm not crazy about PTI either.

And I always thought SNF on ESPN was great, and I think MNF is far better than NBC's Sunday night.

They're about equal IMHO, but with Collinsworth replacing Madden, this might change. Depends on his chemistry with Michaels.

We'll see. Gruden has the personality to pull it off (like Madden), and he's young enough to be able to do it for many years if he wants to.

Agreed. Of all of the afternoon programming on ESPN, PTI is the only program a sports fan really needs to see. Tony Kornheiser's great on PTI (and his radio shows were pretty good, too). That prowess never really transferred to a live game, though.
