June 19, 1965 KYW Radio Changeover to WKYC-Bill Barrett

I just posted last night to the Cleveland Classic Media Blog an article written by the late Bill Barrett..Longtime Radio-Television writer/columnist for the Cleveland Press. A Humorous take on the KYW/WKYC switch..set to happen Early Saturday morning June 19, 1965 with all night DJ Jay Lawrence at the mike..Also of interest, the latest post has the Friday Evening June 18, 1965 Cleveland Radio Schedules with descriptions of the FM stations at the time..very different from what they would become only 3 years later..

The Schedules are first..scroll down a little for the Bill Barrett article..

Hi to anyone who might remember

I remember that morning well. I had the Westinghouse management stealing furniture and computers (356)
to take with to Philadelphia. I had the NBC execs in the building counting everything and watching Westinghouse trying to sneak out of the building with everything that would fit under their suit coats.
I had them all wearing huge top coats stuffed with the stations property. My imagination ran wild that morning. I knew I was safe. Those were incredible years. Jerry and I singing and laughing, Specs and Hare,
Jim Runyon so sophisticated and Jim Stagg, the perfect music jock.

I guess my laugh is still on the horror movie, Is it still Big Chuck? Anyway. I've been a talk show host for a lot of years now. I'm on 92.3 in Phoenix. Been there for quite a few years. In fact, listen in some Saturday or Sunday night 7-10 pm. KTAR.com. Relive all of our "yutes".

We had some wonderful times. Remember the Beatles? Jerry and JIm and I outside the Theatrical trying to find young ladies to come up to the Beatles hotel room. (by the way, no problem)

Anyway, Thanks for some great memories, I could go on about KYW, WKYC . I shan't.

Be well

Jay Lawrence

jay--i was just entering my teens when you and specs/howard and runyon were on kyw/wkyc. i split time listening to you and uncle joe and johnny andrews on hello radio640 in akron. johnny just retired at the beginninig of august from being the operations chief for salem in omaha. you had some trmendous humour on the radio. big chuck and little john just retired from 38 years of great skits and terrible movies on tv8. thanks for brightening my days back in junior high. btw harry martins blog is hilarious!!--best wishes--david5258

Hi Jay L. Nice hearing from you, by the way, Retired Newsman Ken Courtright said hello, and he remembers all of the fun you guys had at KYW and WKYC...he has told me so many storied about the things people did to try and make Ken crack up at the mic while doing the news...all the best, and listener...

Hello Jay:
Let me say I am totally surprised and honored to hear from you. To be honest, I dont remember much on the radio side as I was only 7 years old at the time. What's funny is, on the KYW/WKYC-TV side I somewhat recall even at that age, there seemed to be a different "tone" I guess when NBC took over the TV station..Westinghouse seemed more locally oriented than NBC..I could tell that even as a 7 year old. I plan to have some other articles in my blog related to the Changeover on the TV side as well in the next few weeks..Again, sir, thank you for sharing..

jnight

Tell Ken I said hi.

It was our sworn function then to break up news people during their news. I remember being the announcer for a network newscast on NBC when we were WKYC. It was part of my show but I was paid extra to be the announcer just on that newscast. Virgil Dominic was the newsman. I had a live commercial for DCON which named all the Rats it killed. I had never been able to do the commercial without breaking up, They were selling tickets for the news that afternoon. Little did they know I had pre recorded it. I was roundly booed.

For the good times

Jay

Jay:
Just a note on Big Chuck..He just this last June retired after 46 years at WJW-Channel 8..He and his sidekick, "Lil John" Rinaldi just ended the horror-movie show in the last few weeks..They're doing personal appearances and selling DVD's of their skits..From what I know of Chuck..One of the classiest guys around...

At that time, I was 9 years old and living on the other side of the swap, about 50 miles from Philly. I remember waking up one morning and seeing the KYW test pattern on channel 3 there, and being surprised since we had moved there from Medina county.

And the laugh from BCLJ is immortalized, at least in my mind.

Cliff Feightner ;D

Jay L.... Ken Courtright said one time during the 5 PM news, some radio announcers came in a lit his news pages on fire, and Ken mentioned that he had remembered every news story from the 4 PM news and never missed a beat on the 5 PM news one afternoon, they tried to make him break down during the NBC news from Cleveland and could not do it...I also wanted to tell you that I have a recording of two radio's that were tuned in to both the Station in Phila. and the Station in Cleveland, and at 5:00 AM, both Cleveland and Phila. were announcing "This is KYW" at the same time for five minutes. Your laugh on Big Chuck/Lil John will always make us laugh. Thanks for some great memories.

Hey Jay...figured I'd chime in

Back in '65 I lived in Solon, had a paper route listened to 1100 and just starting to get the itch for radio. Back then my brother who was 9 at the time and myself just couldn't figure out why 1100 came in so loud at night in Solon, but 1260 could not be audable at all.

ken courtwright still had that delightful sense of humor and unflappability when i worked weekends at sprtscountry 104.5 wqkt in the mid 90s--david 5258

David,

Did we talk recently, at the Mill Restaurant inside of Buehlers in Orrville?

cliff-entirely possible-i live 2 blocks from buelers on orrville, shop there frequently, occasionally eat at the mill.email me at my private email and we can powwow--david 5258 [email protected]

WOOOOW,,,, Does anyone remember listening to WCLV Saturday night on June 19, 1965? Bob Conrad ran a contest to see who could come up with the best acronym for W K Y C. The winner was "Western Kalamazoo Yacht Club".. I'll never forget it Jay. And I still have my blanket!!
Remember the KYW "Cleveland Love Song" ---"KYW wants the world to know were in love with you"..I have that record!
