JVC KT-HDP1 now $9.97 at Radio Shack on line

This HD tuner originally sold for $150. Includes a nice multi-line display, AM-FM, remote control, internal FM transmitter. 12 v.
3.5 mm audio output. I plan to add computer speakers and power adapter for cigarette lighter plug. Menu driven balance, equalizer, signal strength and transmitter frequency controls.

Anyone had any experience with this discontinued model?

I bought two on eBay following a broken window and theft of the Jump radio I had in my Chrysler Cirrus.

I preferred the Jump over the JVC. Navigation around the radio was easier with the Jump. The JVC is a deck mounted unit. The tuning buttons take some getting used to because it is a scanning priority.

One of the two in-line modulators on the AM side is non-functional for AM reception. It was defective out of the box, not a design flaw.

It is better than nothing, although some on this board would disagree.

Isn't it sad that no one will buy an HD radio even for $10 or $20. HD radio is on a fire sale!

Even the best home HD radio, the Sony XDRF1HD, is discontinued.

Sad, but sadder is, that iBiquity doesn't see the writing on the wall....to me, it looks like the DXers might be winning this round! As long as there's Internet radio, I'm cool with that!

I have the Sony....practically all I DX with now!

I still see HD-FM as viable for the non-comms. It can be used as the SCA of the new millenium.

We'll see.

The AM needs too much maintenance.

The radios are going the way of beta1.

Yup, looks like the DXers might win when HD is turned off because it's a waste of money for the stations, and the DXers got a few great radios made for receiving the weak HD signals.

Amazon has the KT-HDP-2's price reduced from $149.95 to $10.95, the buyer saves $139.45. Although it's 98 cents more than what Radio Shack is selling. That tells me something...HD is ........still like my XDR-F1HD...

Maybe I can now give the gift of HD Radio. I can't believe any car radio would sell for $10. You can't even get a piece of crap Coby radio for $10.

That might be perceived as insulting.

Just for grins, I ordered one of the JVCs. With shipping and Sales Tax (I'm in Texas and so is Radio Shack) it came to almost $17.00 which isn't as much of a bargain, but still very cheap. I'll report how it works when it arrives.

Interesting. If they sold it at that price (or close) with the home kit I might jump on it. After my last move the bedroom home stereo's AM/FM section quit working, so I'm having to use the Insignias or my AMAX Walkman for AM. If I thought the AM section of this was half decent, it'd be worth a shot.

My JVC HD radio arrived very quickly. It is an "OK" radio, but not "great." The home kit would be helpful. The included "Professional Installation" kit is helpful, bot not really convenient, unless you want to pull out your existing radio, and find the antenna lead. On older cars, that is easy to do. On my current ride (a 2007 Chevy Tahoe) I'm not really up for the adventure. I'd planned to use it indoors anyway. If you intend to do that, you will need a 12 volt power supply, but they are easy to find. I had one in a junk box that works fine.

With a simple rat-tail antenna, the sensitivity is less than stellar. It is not in the same league as the Sony. There are over 30 stations in my area that Radio Locator says come in well enough to be local. In the scan mode the radio landed on about a half a dozen FM stations and three AM stations. None of those broadcast in HD. Hopefully, connecting an outdoor antenna will improve things. The AM reception was not really listenable, unless you REALLY were interested in their programming. It was low-fidelity, and very noisy. The AM noise isn't the radios problem, but it would be nice if all that DSP power was used to clean up things a bit. The FM sounded fine.

Like all other HD radios, this one runs quite warm. My biggest disappointment is a lack of RDS decoding. It simply isn't there.

Still, it is well worth the $9.97 plus shipping and tax. You never know when you might need another FM tuner.

Has anyone tried using the FM modulator in this unit at home? Does it output enough power to use for rebroadcasting an HD-2 or 3 around the house? Might be nice in an area where the NPR station offers additional formats.

Why can't anybody put a decent AM tuner in their HD tuners? Can it even receive HD stereo AM? Does this unit also have AM at a very very low level, like most HD radios I've used (before they burn-up from the heat?)
NO RDS? If no RDS, then no sale for me. I think it's a JVC thing, as even their beautiful double-DIN car radio with HD does NOT have RDS, yet the factory Nissans have RDS and no HD and no satellite connections anymore - only iPod crap connectors. I wanted XM and HD, and can get neither in a factory package this year.

I am thinking about giving this as a gift. (I know an HD2 that the recipient would like.) But he won't put it in the car. Is there a proper kit that RS sells to go with this unit?

There is the KV-K1019 Home Kit on Amazon for $29.99 + shipg. Includes ac adapter, hook-up cable, and telescoping antenna. Since the cigarette lighter adapter is easily available, as is the cable, the only item to improvise is the antenna.
