K-Love operators are about to lose one of their stations unless

Almost everyone I know uses Pandora and/or Spotify, Sirius XM, all that to listen to music. Some lower-income humans I've met before have listened to the radio in recent years, but not many.
I myself just prefer Internet radio most of the time but I do have a small transmitter I run Pandora through, signal gets out about a block or more.

That's to listen to music, not to listen to radio. Pandora and Spotify are strictly music distribution platforms. They've replaced CDs and cassettes.

There's a reason why EMF has spent millions and millions of dollars to buy FM stations around the country, and that's because they believe lots of people listen, and putting their format on FM radio will further their mission. Otherwise, they'd simply do internet radio, and put all that money someplace else.

The "absolutely everyone listens exclusively to obscure indie bands and 10,000 song oldies playlists on the internet" argument gets old. I've had people tell me that absolutely no one listens tp radio, and the morning show in town is just blowing air because there is not a single person listening. That's all nonsense but the thought prevails.

I think Spotify and Pandora are radio. It's Internet radio, sure, but still radio. I'm not sure what EMF is going to do with 92-1 in Austin. All I can say is I hope they don't miss the deadlines.

And some Indie music's pretty good.

The fact that some people use it as radio doesn't mean other forms of radio, such as FM, are "just about over."

The numbers don't lie. Over 239 million people listen to AM & FM radio. I guess the people you know fall into the 8% of people who don't use AM & FM. But the other 92%, including a large number outside "lower income people" listen to radio.

EMF might be building out this translator as we speak. I don't know their plans. But, what if they bought it in the first place simply to make sure it doesn't fall into the the wrong hands? What if it is was strictly a defensive move to protect their full power stations on the same frequency in Hutto?

I'm confused. You post on here a lot and it is mostly news or observations I have no heard elsewhere, which are good and interesting. But if you mostly prefer "internet radio", why are you spending so much time commenting on this SA and Austin forum that is essentially only about AM/FM broadcasts.

Let's look at this logically: over the air radio is advertising supported. No matter how much research you throw at advertisers, they will not buy what does not produce results. If advertising on over the air radio stations did not work because nobody is listening, every radio station would go under in months and it would have already happened. Public stations would be gone because a certain percentage of their income comes directly from listeners. I've heard all the arguments and all they are is 'opinions'. Funny thing about friends...they're the people you know and tend to be very much like you, so it is logical to say if you don't listen to radio, chances are your friends are just like you. If they like formats that don't appeal to the masses, chances are you do too. That is not research. To research you survey people of all economic and age groups to determine things. I know, you'll say all the surveys are bogus. That is a stupid statement. We both know the best business plan for success is to fabricate lies and pass it off as truth charging an arm and a leg for it. If that doesn't sound like the way to run a business, you agree with me that such statements about bogus data is stupid. I don't know radio's future but I do know people listen and advertisers get results that makes them buy again and again. And we have the data that supports this by companies that are under constant scrutiny for accuracy. Certainly K-Love would not be acquiring stations if nobody listened.

I just grew up with radio, got my first one when I was about 6 and always have been fascinated for some reason how radio works. I have a small part 15 I turn on sometimes here in north San Antonio, and I even heard from a neighbor who was impressed with my station once.

I emailed K-Love and got a reply, quoted in part below. Presumably the tower crew is building it out as we post on these forums...

"Thank you for sharing your concern about our construction permit (CP) to broadcast on 92.1 FM in Austin nearing its expiration date. We have a team of people who work with our Engineers on making these deadlines before losing the license. We had to file a modification to the CP in order to build it to broadcast K-LOVE."

EMF has filed the 350 "License to Cover" application indicating the station has been built out according to their construction permit. It should be on now or will be shortly.

It was NOT on a week ago. I checked... All I could hear on 92.1 in Austin was K-Love which is their station in the north of town. I could hear K-Love very weakly in south Austin the same as it was before the translator came into existance.

EMF I assume rushed through it.

Unless you are right near it, you might not be able to hear it. The data suggests that it is broadcasting with a whole 1 watt ERP of power at 12 meters from the ground and highly directional toward the south. If you're at Bee Cave and Loop 360, you might stand a chance of hearing it. It might have a 2 mile signal from north to south, tops.

Let’s hope those Evil ****s miss the deadline. ;)

Stan, that comment is way, way over the line. I was unaware obscene name-calling is acceptable on this forum.

EMF bought the license fairly. They deserve to hold the license, assuming they follow the rules and in my experience and observation, EMF follows the rules and generally has good engineering practices.

It's okay if you do not personally like K-Love, but you don't have to be rude.

I'm sure the people at KNLE in Austin would probably love it if K-Love lost their license. From what I've heard the guy that is running 88-1 KNLE dislikes the media industry completely.
He only plays independent Christian music on his station.

If K-Love does lose it, Stan, who do you want to see on 92.1 FM?

Personally I Want Tejano Returning On 92.5 That 92.1 Is Ruining KNBT Signal MayBe New Braunfels Could Gain A Power Up If That Useless Hutto Channel Dies Yes I Remember Club KKLB And 92.3 Possibly Move There Signal Towards Waco On 92.1 And Also Gain More Power
